Hello from Germany!

Can you please give me some recommendations for shot and RB loads for my 12 gauge Pedersoli double barrel shotgun?

Regards

Kirrmeister

Kirrmeister:

I load 2 3/4 drams( 75 grains) of FFg powder( GOEX, but Wano/Schuetzen is fine) then the OS cards. (4), then 1 1/4 oz. #5 shot and 2 OS cards on top, then lube the barrel with a cleaning patch liberally wiped in Wonderlube. This is for Pheasants. For Dove, I shoot the same powder charge, but use 1 1/8 oz of #8 shot.

Kirrmeister,
I have had good resuls with my CVA 12 gauge many years ago using: 80 or 90 grains of 2fg with a card then a half inch fiber wad, and one and one eighth or one and one quarter oz. of shot. I used #6's for pheasants, crows and grouse. I used 7 and a halfs for doves. I used 2's or 4's for turkey. All my success was at the pattern board. My lack of success in the field was a direct result of my lousy shooting!

All the old timers used to talk about using a balanced load. Use the same measure for powder or shot. In my Pedersoli Bess I use 90 grains of 2f and 90 grains of shot over a card wad and cushion wad. The last time I used shot, we were using mineral oil as a cushion wad lubricant, that seemed to work OK. The 90 grains of shot was about 3 times the recommended amount of shot, but I figure the whole point of the exercise is to get a cloud of shot out there to hit the target, so the more the merrier.

Try the balanced load with whatever powder charge you feel comfortable with. Just make sure to try it out on paper a couple of times before you try it hunting.

Scroll down in the smoothbore forum and read the overshot card method only post. There are lots of good ideas in that one. If you shoot and reload one barrel, check the other and make sure it hasn't jumped it's load forward under recoil.
