Does anyone here shoot conicals out of a 2nd Model Dragoon? If so what is the maximum safe load for a 180 grain bullet?

The only mold I had for my .44 Colts threw a 212 grain conical. I believe I used to load 35 grains of fffg under them. Made a very satisfying bang and lots of smoke. I may actually have hit something with it, too, but it is very unlikely that it was what I was aiming at. Conicals are notorious for being difficult to load straight unless you are really finicky about it. The face of the rammers seem to have been designed for ball rather than conical. But it is fun to experiment.

As far as a powder load the max (using FFFg) is whatever you can get in the cylinder under the bullet.
That may not give you the best accuracy but unless you use something like 4Fg (FFFFg) powder, you can't really overload your dragoon. (4Fg could produce excessive pressure so don't use it in these big bore guns).

You might find that reducing the load and backing the bullet with something like a Wonder Wad will help the accuracy. :)

Are you casting your own conicals or buying them? Back when I was fooling with them you had to roll your own. Else
where in the forum you'll find insructions for making cartridges. They work better with conicals than balls in my experience. Won't improve accuracy to any degree that I ever noticed, but it did up my rate of fire somewhat. Maybe I ought to dig my Dragoons out and give it another try--I do
recall it being a lot of fun providing the range was short.

Thanks Russ and Zonie, I appreciate the info. I have shot it with roundballs and enjoy shooting it a lot . I would like to try round nose pistol bullets from Buffalo Bullet Company. The nose is round and I believe has the same radius as the roundball.

As for accuracy, mine seems to perform better with heavier loads with roundballs. My concern was that the conical would build up too much chamber pressure.

I have shot mine with pyrodex P and 30 grain pistol pellets, as well as 777 50 grain pellets. I save the 3F goex I have for my flintlocks.
