My local sportsman club has been putting on 22 shoots for the past year and we are now planning a black powder shoot. With 22s we have been shooting 15 to 25 targets. That seems like a lot for black powder. Does anyone have any tips or target ideas that they would like to share?

Last weekend we had five shooters, and we shot at water jugs, three that were hidden for the walk, and at the same time had a gong and it required five shots. We'd have three or four shooters at that one and everyone was loading while one guy shot, then the next guy shot while the first was shooting, etc til the last guy finished. The last was a paper target, so only one guy shot at a time, and this took a lot longer. So, we spent half a day shooting. One guy kept the talley. The more you have shooting the more targets it'll take to keep everyone busy. It sure was fun though.

FWIW, most trail walks around here (PNW) go 15-20 shots. Whether that's reasonable in your situation will depend on how many shooters your range can accommodate at once, number of shooters expected, target reset times if required, etc..

Steel is easy, no reset and its a hit or miss with instant scoring, plus the "crowd" gets to see the results right off the bat.

Paper targets can be done, but reset and scoring time add up, especially if the range has to go cold for posting/pulling targets. They also don't have as much "crowd" appeal. Around here paper tends to be reserved for a single tie breaker shot.

String cuts can be done by setting up two rails with vertical strings tacked between them (think a ladder on its side with the strings being the rungs.) You can preset 40 or 50 strings to match the expected number of shooters so no reset is required. Usually helps to number each string so the shooter has to call his shot.

Card cutting (multiple saw cuts in a board to hold a bunch on edge) , driving tacks (large board with multiple tacks set in rows and columns), eggs or charcoal briquets on a string can be preset the same way. Like steel they have the satisfaction of instant scoring.

Those are some good ideas. Thank you. I really like the trail walk but we do not have a shooting range to accommodate that.

15 to 20 targets is common for black powder shoots. Targets can easily be made from just about anything. Suckers, golf tees, Golf balls, water filled ballons, empty or water filled pop or beer cans on a string, Crossed strings, hanging gongs, potatoes, any paper target, clay pigeons, eggs, and the list goes on. :idunno: :idunno:
