I ordered and received a bag of leather scraps with my latest online purchase, and there are a few pieces in the bag that would probably make descent lock covers for hunts on rainy days. I'll be hunting flintlock in December with my brother and his two boys are I'd like to work up a few for us... just in case the weather doesn't cooperate.

I have no leather working skills yet, but figure this is as good a place to start as any!

Can anyone direct me to a simple pattern?

Dragonsfire's post is perfectly fine but some of us with a bit more OCD do the same but start with a slightly more oval outline for a sleeker look! :haha:

I've used this pattern a couple times now. It works well, but I found it best to slightly enlarge it and make the rear V shaped cut wider. This gives a taller peak to the finished product. I worked a bunch of mink oil into them, both sides, then a final coat of sno-seal on the outside. Works well.

A piece of scrap leather wrapped around the lock and tied with a single string works well. So does a nice piece of wool.
