I maybe interested, have you pulled barrel and checked for proof marks?
Next question, are you interested in a trade?
No , I have not pulled the barrel , I did remove the lock and check there.
I am just going on what I can see.
No trades at this time.
Generally I only trade when it is someone local to me.
Where we can meet and look over the others trade item with no mailing / shipping involved.
Thanks,

Working hard to sell it ;-)))))

W RICHARDS is, of course, NOT "Westley Richards".
NEVER SAID IT WAS!!
I try to show as many pictures as I can when I list something on here or anywhere else.
I also try to give as much information (doing my homework ) on the item that I can find.
If that is working hard to sell an item , I guess I do!!

I had bought 7 ML rifles from an estate and this is one of them.
The estate had no records on any of the rifles, like where they were bought , from who , so on.

I tried looking up the name W. Richards and found :
W. Richards was a trade name used on shotguns manufactured by Henri Pieper of Liege Belgium and imported by large sporting goods distributors such as H. & D. Folsom Arms Company in the period 1880-1898.
Most were double barrel shotguns , these shotgun most assuredly has Damascus, Twist, or Laminated Steel barrels and is not safe to use with modern ammunition, even low brass shells.

W. Richards was also a trade name used on shotguns made for H. & D. Folsom Arms Company of NYC which were made by their subsidiary, Crescent FireArms Company of Norwich, CT.

That is way I think the lock was salvaged or a repurposed shotgun lock and it used on this rifle..

If you skim the Association of Ohio Longrifle Collectorz newsletter online you will find similar rifles described. The crescent buttplate and trigger guard are distinctive Ohio/Midwestern traits. Some were made with full stocks, and backaction looks, which were fairly common. The caliber suggests a rifle made for target shooting, another trait of rifles made in that region.

This rifle would be a good buy for someone living in the Midwest, or interested in regional guns.

Ok, I understand. From what I've read W.Richards guns were fairly heavily reproduced. Can't depend on what lock says always, I thought if you can't find any other markings, you may find something if you pulled barrel.
Just a thought.
Squirrel rifle? Exactly what I was thinking!

Thank You for some new reference material with The Association of Ohio Longrifle Collectors newsletter.
3 of the guns I bought from this estate ( In Ohio - Knox/Licking Co. area ) all have what seems
to be salvaged or a repurposed shotgun locks , Eclipse Gun Co. - Lock , H. J. Sterling - Lock and
the W. Richards - Lock.

Left Hand - H. J. Sterling- Lock Smooth Bore .685 - 1" round barrel Percussion Rifle.
Eclipse Gun Co. - Lock with Barrel signed : S. Lafferty . 44 Caliber Percussion Rifle..
W. Richards - Lock .28 Caliber Percussion Rifle..

Found this yesterday myself in a listing of Ohio Gunsmiths :
Lafferty, Smith - Born in 1824 in OH. Worked in Bellville , OH
in 1850, and still listed in a directory here in 1853. He had
left the area by 1860.

Looks to be the same guy.
Thanks for your information.

YES, it is still for sale.
YES, there is a nipple on this one and I was able to remove it.
Yes , I had the lock off to clean it up some. And it seems to work just fine.
I have not loaded it or fired it though.
I did cock it and work the hammer and triggers to check function.
