How would I go about finding out if a Chambers Colonial Virginia lock would fit on a Virginia style stock from Pecatonica. I asked Dick at Pecatonica and he couldn't tell me if one would work or not, because he doesn't have one at his shop. I wanted to use this lock on my .62 Virginia smooth bore (Pecatonica stock) but went with the Large Siler. I know the Colonial Virginia lock is bigger than the Large Siler, but don't know how much.
Anybody got any ideas how I can find out about this?

Track of the Wolf has actual size pictures in it's catalog. They are pretty dang close to being right on as far as size.

IM a newby but couldnt you trace it on some thin cardboard and send it to the stock guy? He could eyeball your pattern and let you know.

or ya can get the stock from pecatonica without the lock mortise done thats what i'm doing fer my lancaster....plus it will allow me to move the postion of the lock anyway i might need too....................bob

T.O.W shows a Chamber's Virginia Fowling Gun lock and a Chamber's English Fowling Gun Lock ...they look exactly the same to me..but, are they the same as what Chambers calls a Chamber's Colonial Virginia lock?
Looks like I'm going to have to order one of TOW catalogs..cause I don't have the lock on hand. I do have a Pecatonica Virginia style stock on hand though..and guess I could trace the lock in catalog and cut out then place next to stock.........if I knew which one is the Chambers Colonial Virginia lock.

That's the one I want Swamprat..but don't know if it's the same as the ones in TOW..I have to get their catalog to get a picture of lock to trace and see if it will fit on my stock.
I would call and ask at Chambers, but doubt they know which stock I'm talking about at Pecatonica.

You might be surprised! I have always heard Pecatonica makes a lot of the stocks for Track and so on and so forth. Worth the call or e-mail to find out. If they don't know they will tell you so and you haven't lost anything.

That's what I'm going to have to do if I use Pecatonica cause Dick said they don't inlet for the lock I want. The lock they use in that style is L&H and I want a Chambers. I may have to go with the Chambers.

I'm going to have to email Chambers and see what they can tell me.

Looking at Chamber's website it says the Large Siler lock is 5-1/4" x 1"..that's the lock I have on my Peocatonica Virginia syle stock now. The site says the Colonial Virginia lock is 6" x 1"...that's the lock I want to put on the Virginia syle Pecatonica stock I want to use for .54cal. rifle. I think I should be able to make 3/4" extra length work if I inlet myself. If someone see's a problem please let me know.
Thanks for any info.

Give Chambers a call and ask them if it will fit would seem the best way to me if you want to be sure. :results:

Woody

One of the problems with precarve stocks is that they either do limit you because they are closely shaped to final shape OR they do not limit you and are not close to final shape and therefore you have to understand what wood has to "go" to prevent it looking like a club.

Never having used a precarve for a longrifle, so do not know whether there is that much extra wood on a Pecatonica. One may assume they designed it for a specific lock and to be close to profile for that lock.

BUT when building from blanks I let the barrel and lock do the talking as far as any shaping from the lock panels forward. A lock larger in height may necessitate a lower line to the forestock to get the lock panels right. I doubt either of these locks differs enough in the angle of the tail to cause problems like a banana-shaped early lock might.

You've also got to know whether or not you have enough wood on the lock panels. Everything has to be envisioned from the touch-hole.

I would make a tracing of both locks from a catalogue (fullsize pix) and line up the pans correctly then see how much the larger lock extends for and aft, top and bottom, and how that fits into the precarve.

Better yet if you want the full experience start with a blank. You will learn much more.
