Ok, just to make those who ardently oppose long range hunting shots happy”¦ This morning I went down to the woods in Crawford County GA to still hunt with my .54 flinter. Had one doe surprise me and walk up to about 3 feet from me as I was sitting at the base of a tree in the open. She sniffed, turned and walked away”¦I swear one more step and she would have licked my face!!
About an hour later I was moving with the trees toward an area that looked like it might be a deer trail. Stopped and leaned up against two trees growing close together for a few minutes. Then I saw what I thought were a doe and a yearling walking across my front...partially screened by trees and brush. They stopped to graze”¦ the doggone little one grazed for about 15 minutes right up to me, saw me and looked and looked and then took off. The big one came over to see what was happening. She was face on so I had to wait. She went behind a tree and then emerged side on, looking at me no more than 10 yards”¦so being confident that she was well within my range of accuracy I took her through the heart”¦ONLY it wasn’t a she”¦it was a buck with three points on one side and one long antler on the other”¦ looks to be about 2-3 years old. I was so busy being still and getting a good sight picture when he emerged from behind the tree I didn’t even see the antlers!! I was sure surprised when I tracked her about 30 yards and found a buck laying there!!
