Howdy yall! Ive been faced with a problem.Weve been having quite a few thefts in the neighborhood here in the past few weeks ...mainly guns and such. Its a real shame too..hasnt been long since we used to leave our doors unlocked at night. Livin out in the country just aint the same.Anyway....Ive got all my modern guns in a safe now in the bedroom...but got a problem.....they dont make a safe or cabinet tall enough to hold my longguns.Ive looked everywhere but no one has them or even knows where to get one! Any of yall ever been faced with this problem.? Thought about building a tall cabinet...but my carpentry skills dont amount to much.Any ideas????????Thanks yall................TN

I have the same problem. My long fowler is the single most expensive gun i have, and the only one that won't fit in my gunsafe. Best thing i have found is to hide it well whenever i am going to be gone for a while.

put them up against the wall in the back of the closet leaning up against the wall or cradled in a cutout like you would see in a gun store. Take two heavy lag lugs and screw them well into a stud {right through the sheetrock} on either side and run a heavy insulated cable through all of the trigger gaurds and padalock the cable to the lugs on both ends

well ya can't leave yer guns unattended for any long periods of time no matter how many ya have....they get lonely too

Friend of mine had a sorta deep closet. He made a simple notched rack along that back wall then put a removable false wall in front. It was behind the clothes rod and with stuff hangin there, you would never ever guess that you could take that cedar panel and just slide it out.

My Winchester safe will only hold my rifles up to 36" barrels. The others have to go in the hidey hole.

Well, I know a guy who, when he built his house, built a gun safe into the house. Here's where it gets interesting: the safe was a whole room lined with vertical and horizontal rebar throughout the walls (like a cage) and with an old bank vault door (with combination lock and all) as the door to the room. If you can't get your guns in there, well.... (inner monologue: you can't have too many guns, so what next?). Anyway, just a thought :blah:

There are some safes that are up to 72" tall. I can barely fit my 39" bbl 1863 Springfields or P53 Enfields into my safe and the 46" bbl Bess is outside. I removed the lock on the Bess so it's less attractive. You can always find a wall, open it up and make a secret cabinet behind it. Mount a mirror on a piano length hinge (be sure the mirror's location is logical) to conceal it.

sounds like a perfect new product for a gun safe company to start making . If enough people made a request to one of those companys I'll bet they would offer one .

when i was at the outdoors show in springfield mass. a dealer there had gun safes tall enought for our long guns (42 in. barrels) they came in different sizes 6 gun 8 gun 18 gun etc.. fire proof, course they ran about $1200 depending on size....seems like alot, but a friend of mine went to insurance co. to get a rider for his guns,,,quoted him additional$700 year! lady at ins. co. told him to buy the safe....he did and he's really satisfied...course they're kinda hard to get where ya want em in the house.but they can't get out!

If you've got a long narrow closet -with an off center door, you can build-up a false floor [about 6 inches]. Fit a removeable panel -sized for access, carpet the inside and lay carpet over the entire closet floor [somewhat inconvenient, but largely undetectable]
Another effective option, especially if you've got forced air heat, would be to have a sheet metal fabricator make up a section of heavy gauge duct -about six feet long and 8 x 10 inches or larger in cross section, with a removeable end piece. Mount the new duct securely [strapping/lags] adjacent to, or butted against, existing ductwork, with comfortable access to the removeable end. Use construction adhesive, duct tape or whatever you've got to hold some carpeting or blanket material to the inside bottom of the duct; slip your shootin' irons in and replace the end piece.
Get a couple of airedales or rottweilers, and rest easy.

THe idea for the hide-e-hole in the wall is a good idea, but not very smart because of lets see, wiring, pipes for water and gas, andthe fact that a large majority of interior walls are loadbearing. And unless you were really really really smart, you would make sure you did it when you were say remodeling the bathroom or something like that, because it would be hard to explain why you have a carpenter come out to your house....
but since most of use here are smart and know proper home construction we dont need outside people coming in now do we?

Here in Arizona I've seen Gun Safes tall enough to keep longrifles in but most of these safes are at the "high end" of the available features. They are fireproof, pick proof and dam near any other kind of proof you'd want but the prices are high. Like over $3000 plus delivery costs.

I don't know what the delivery costs are now but it takes a lot more than a 1/2 ton truck and a couple of wimpy guys.
They weigh enough that their weight might be a problem for folks living in a frame house.

Hey yall.I found what I was looking for and thought Id pass it along.I ordered a wall gun locker from cheaper than dirt. It bolts to the wall and holds 6 guns. Its got two arms that open up from the center. You place the riles on the inner side and close the arms around them.Kinda what you used to see in the old police departments. Thanks again yall!!!

I bought a safe locally - SENTRY brand. Although it's a low end price, it has a combo. lock and holds up to 42" barreled guns. And it is HEAVY!! They say it will hold 14 longguns, but they weren't thinking about sidelocks!! Bill/In oregon
