Hello all!
I want to make my own bag with some leather I have and am looking for some downloadable or copyable patterns.

Do any of you have any you would be willing to share with me?

Brett sr

If you can lay your hands on the Book Of Buckskinning series, Vol 3 has an article by Madison Grant, and Vol 4 has an article by Steve Lalioff. Both have patterns. Lalioff's article is better on technique.

You could do what I did. After looking at pictures and photos of various bags, I drew one out on an old shopping bag, played around with the design until I got what I wanted, and then cut it out and used it as a pattern. It worked out better than I expected.

I took one of those kits you see everywhere and made a pattern on a brown papaer bag. Now all I need to do is enlarge it a little and find the leather I want.
I have some deer hide and elk but the deer is to floppy and I think the elk would work but I wanted something with the oiled side instead of the rawhide on both is what I have.

Brett I don't know what time period your portraying ( or if ya are at all) but most guys make their bags way to big. They try to carry everything but the kitchen sink with them for a days hunt. For the mid 1700s a bag only about 8x8 is plenty big. Larger came a bit after more towards the 1830s. Try to cut yer gear down to the basics. Heck most days I'm going hunting I don't even carry a bag, my stuff ends up in my weskit pockets. Powder horn over the sholder, couple balls n patchs in a pocket, knife in my belt. If my gun breaks so bad I can't shoot it I probably can't fix it in the woods anyway so why carry all that stuff with me. If I'm on a weekend outing then I'll of course have more stuff but it will be carried in my haversack n not my gun bag. Just some thoughts YMHS Birdman

Dont really have a period to portray, but would go with 11840-60 if I had to pick one.
Looking to carry my wares for the local club shoots. balls, mechanical flask, short starter, patches, asst. tools and rod ends. Mostly a "keep it all together" bag. I have a basic 8x8 soft leather bag that is just to flimsy. I want something a little stiffet and have a few small pockets or organizing loops for the powder ect.
I have some really nice 7-8 oz leather that would make nice bags, albeit it is black.

Brett if ya like the smaller bag n don't mind, cut it apart at the seams and just add some to the outside dimentions, figure in the size of the pockets ya want, n go from there. Then if ya want resew the small bag as practice before ya work on the larger new one. This will also help ya figure out just what to what needs sewn first. With pockets n such it sometimes gets confuseing and ya need to think about each piece before ya start sewing. heck its worth a try LOL YMHS Birdman

Thanks, ButlerFord, I copied it off the bottom of that page after I downloaded, and printed it out for my use. Makes a great , and authentic Possibles bag. Bill

Also the Book "The Mountain Men" by George Laycock has a really simple pattern in minature to follow. You only have 2 seams to sew using this pattern. I'm going to make one of these and modify it a little bit. He also has a pattern for a simple shot bag also.

I just got the book today, and thumbed through it and am really excited to read the book. Go to ebay and search for the book, then go to the Used link and you can get it really cheap.

That leather of yours may be a little on the heavy side. I speak from experience because I have made a lot of bags, the next one always is going to be an improvement over the last but most aren't. Just a plain bag is best. Last April or May MuzzleBlasts had an article on cloth lined bags. You can use 3-4oz splits and pillow ticking. You end up with a pretty stiff material that is still lightweight- you may want to give it a try.
On the stiff leather you really need to add a gussett or side panel to create sufficient inner space and the top of the front panel needs to be sort of dished to reach inside the bag. Two heavy pieces of leather sewn flat together won't hold a thing- trust me- I know. This gussett ought to taper to a point at the top so the flap will completely cover the opening. Good luck.
