The gennies were made in the US by Henry Deringer, so no proof marks.

The proof marks on a modern repro would depend on what country made it (Italy, Spain, etc)

Doesn't the barrel in your kit have any ?

Or, do I not understand what you meant by "looking for proof stamps" ?

I'm not sure what the OP means by "looking for proof stamps" either.

Another possibility is that he is looking for the tools that makes the stamps.

According to George Moller in American Military Shoulder Arms, Vol II, the barrel markings on the 1817 Contract Rifle, aka Common Rifle, were, "The upper breech quadrant is stamped with 'US" over inspector's initials over a raised 'P' in a sunken oval cartouche. The relative positions of the inspector's initials and cartouche are reversed in some rifles."

I don't know of any commercial stamps that would make these marks, but you could probably simulate them with letter stamps of the appropriate size and use a small punch to make the sunken oval around the "P".

I'm having trouble with the forum today. It is taking a long time to respond. I inadverdently posted the same message twice because it took so long to update and post the first time I attempted.
