Got a rare chance to road trip down to a guy who was giving away some forging tongs he had come by. I jumped all over that. About a 4 hour round trip for me.

All antiques from what I can tell. I picked out 7 and left the rest for others. With these I can make whatever else I might end up needing. One step closer to getting my forge shop set up.

Depending on your gas mileage maybe a $150 to $200 investment in fuel for a 4 hour round trip. Not bad.
Lord A'mercy I'm glad I'm not paying whatever it is you're paying for gas.

Left the house with just over a quarter tank, and gassed up down there (it was 30 cents cheaper a gallon, spent $50) and still have 3/4 tank left. And that's with a 1978 K20 and a 355 cid w/ 4 barrel.

Yeah, you are correct. Figured real quick in head and misplaced a decimal. 4 hours on the road, maybe 250 miles. At 20 miles to a gallon, 12.5 gallons. Maybe $60 depending where you gas up.

Either way, some cool tools.

Nice pick up, but you’ve a way to go.(kidding) half a dozen of the right tongs and you’re set, you can always make more if needed.
I once worked as the fitter/machinist/demonstrator/enginedriver at a recreated gold mine and we were given a complete blacksmith/farriers workshop, mid 1850s building and all.
When the shop was set up again in its new location, I counted 84 pair of tongs, the smallest about 8 inches long and the biggest were two handed affairs for holding 6 inch flat bar, probably for big wagon wheel rims.

once you hand forge a pair like the second from right in your picture, you'll be glad you got a pair for 'free'! You did very well, thank you for leaving some for the next guy.
I watch a lot of black smith vids. 2nd from right are for round bar. I think you need a set for every size round bar you plan to use, ditto for flat stock. Many beginning black smiths hone their techniques by making the numerous tongs needed to forge metal.
