Could I use white lithium grease to seal the chambers of a cap & ball revolver? Or plain regular grease?

Thanks

NO!!!!!
Bad idea. Petrolium based don'cha'know. Black powder burning with petroleum based lubes creates a tough tar like substance that's wicked to flush away.
Why not just buy a small can of solid Crisco. It's been used for generations, works well, cheap, and available everwhere.
Course you could make some of Stumpkillers lube, it's great!
Check past posts by roaddog, he came up with a good over ball lube for revolvers too, but you might have a hard time finding catfish fat, or was that a fat catfish?
Well anyway skip the catfish fat and use roaddogs mix. It's quick simple and should work fine!

Thanks Maxiball.
I read the "Crisco alternative" thread initiated by roaddog. Very interesting.
I've been using Crisco. But always wanted to ask this question about using grease. Just wondering...
Thanks again

I've tried making a new concoction using Crisco and Murphy's oil soap, melting down the Crisco and adding 20% oil soap seemed to give me the right consistency. I went out and tried it yesterday using (one large drop on the pivot side of the ball), spinning the cylinder to distribute it, ended up all over my shirt. :haha:

Personally I like the way the graphite mixture works (the way it applies in the cylinder) I'll be trying some new mixtures over the next three weeks (I want to have this all figured out before the next blanket shoot) I'll let everybody know what I come up with.

Hey Maxiball, how many shots does it take to kill the catfish in a rain barrel (when over two foot deep) :blah: :blah: :blah:

My standard cap-n-ball mix is 50% Crisco, 25% beeswax and 25% Murphy's Oil Soap by weight. I pour it into the large turkey injector syringes and can squeeze just a tad out onto the ball. It has enough beeswax not to be soupy in hot weather.

I don't know as I've never fired a gun when I was two feet underwater. :blah: :haha: :blah:

I believe riarcher was right, adding graphite is not the way to go, this afternoon I went out with my Ruger old Army I brought two different concoctions, the first one (the graphite mixture) the second one (50 % Crisco, 30 % Murphy's oil soap and 20 % naturally lube) . This mixture has the consistency of tartar sauce

Using the graphite mixture accuracy would fall off on the third reloaded. When clean the barrel I noticed a considerable amount of leading. Using the Crisco mix accuracy never did fall off and there was no leading.

The load I was using, .457 round ball (my own cast from Lee mold) and 25 gr. of Goex FFFg. (18 gr. is great for target shooting at 25 yards but my groups at 50 yards become erratic with that light of powder charge)

Accuracy was around three inch groups at 25 yards using two handhold with no rest at 50 yards groups were staying just under 10 inches.

The problem I ran into, I could not duplicate the ease of application that the graphite concoction produced. :curse:
