I'm getting back into Muzzleloading, and want to get recipes to make my own lube. I keep hearing on here about Moose Snot, Moose Milk, Bore Butter, etc. BUT, I'm having a heck of time searching and tracking down recipes for these. Can any of you fine folks direct me to or send me the recipes?

Frank
PS: Hope none of this requires me to run down a moose! Don't think the legs are up to it.

If you go to the top of the forum index you will find article, charts and links. click on that then go to members articles I think.

There are two of Stump Killers formulas there, I use his Moose Juice and it seems to work for me.

Good luck.

Another good lube is made from Ballistol oil. 4 parts water to 1 part oil. Use the oil straight to wipe down your rifle after shooting. Very simple and works great. I can shoot all day without swabbing. Here's their link: http://www.ballistol.com/index.htm . Not saying it's the best, just that it works for me.

Best lube I've found is completely natural and most everyone has it in abundance . . . spit.

I've tried many different recipes with varying degrees of success and satisfaction. Spit has never let me down.

Use tallow, lard, olive oil, etc.
Pre-formulated, authentic and there is no need for a recipe......

You can mix combinations of beeswax and olive oil, tallow, etc and get a pretty good lube. Vary the beeswax to make the mix thicker for use in warm weather. Just don't use any petroleum products in any lube that will be used in the bore as it will cause a gummy mess.

would not want to deprive you of all the fun of searching for and trying every possible recipe known to man,...but, there are no magic recipes, only increasingly expensive and complicated ones! :haha: If you like to experiment and try different things, have at it. OTOH, if you want to keep things simple you can use water and liquid kitchen detergent mixed 10 to 1 only for loading and shooting immediately such as on the range or doing a trail walk. Leaving it loaded in your gun can cause rust from the water and fouling mix. For hunting or cases where the gun will be loaded for a while good old crisco or unsalted lard used sparingly will work fine. If you plan to wipe between shots, the 10-1 water soap is a good solvent.

And there is always good old spit as already stated but it too can cause a rust problem if left loaded too long.
