Anyone have any experience with a Lyman SML 57 Aperture sight? Thinking about getting one for my Trade Rifle.

I recently put the Lyman 57GPR on my Lyman Great Plains. I use a Williams Twilight Aperature with it. I like it quite a lot. It really helps these tired, old eyes of mine

My GPR is equipped with the same sights. They tightened up my groups nicely. I also found the rear aperture is big enough to use for hunting as well.

In general peep sights are great. However, some rules say open sights only. However, most shooting events allow you to compete, but your score doesn't count toward winning.

Also, people think they need a smaller peep than they really need. During hunting, it happens in low light more times than not. I like a .045-.050" for target work, and .090 to .100" for hunting. I can hit soda cans all day long at 100 yards with a .090" peep.

Even the sight with no aperture installed is good.

Lyman in much more durable than some other peep sights. But, they are suspect to being bumped, and the aperture can come undone and lost in the woods floor. Practice a bit with no aperture, and make a scratch mark when you got your sights good. Both elevation and windage.

I've put one on both of my T/C Hawken style rifles. Shot it for a while..then took it off. I do just as well with the decent adjustable rear that comes on the barrels. IMHO...the place most factory rifles REALLY need help is the FRONT sight.

Not on a muzzleloader.

Stump, you have seen me here enough to know how fixed I am in some ways. Putting peeps on an ml was long repugnant to me. But, a couple years ago my club ruled peeps were allowed at our matches. And, fact is, the club still exists today because of that rule. I use them because I could not compete otherwise. Age does that to a person. Larger events often have two categories, one for open only and for 'any metallic'. Eliminate peepers and you will probably eliminate about 1/3 of our people, maybe more.

My eyes stink on ice anymore so I primarily shoot a sightless smoothbore with paper-patched round balls.
That's two of us partner. One of these days the doc will say the cataracts are bad enough to qualify and things may get better...in the meantime, it's fowlers and get up close! :haha:

I shoot the full buckhorn that comes on a Pedersoli Frontier like a ghost ring peep and find it works just fine. At 72 yrs old my eyes aren't like they were when I started shooting 60 years ago.

Peeps are great! In the last 30 yeas I have moved my open rear sight forward 14 inches to stay with open sights on my custom flinter.

The top of the barrel looks funny with 3 brass dovetail fillers.

My custom 40 call is getting a tang primitive peep this year as I want to hit the tree rats.

In trying to keep my round ball flinters as close to historic as possible, I still use the buckhorns.

I do however, have a Lyman Deer Stalker with that peep sight on it. Loaded heavy with conicals,it is my go to gun for serious shooting.

These old retiree eyes ain't what they used to be, but thank the Almighty I can still enjoy makin' smoke!

My new to me GPR is "supposed" to arrive tomorrow evening. It has a Lyman peep. Not thinking it will come with any "inserts"? I have never used peeps before but I think they make different inserts front and rear? If so where can I buy some and about what the cost? Also appears I will need a rear "regular" sight.

I had bout decided not to get a GPR as I have several Investarms by Cabelas but this one was $290.00 and leftie. Hoping its in as good shape as I was told :idunno:

Yes I have one on my Lyman 54 Hawken GPRH along with the hooded front target sight. Shoots very tight and is good enough to hunt with. I love mine. It did bother me some to put a peep rear and hooded target front sight on a Hawken, but accuracy is more important to me than looking cool and original. I have other front stuffers for looken cool and period correct.

I got my inserts from brownell's several years ago and they cost $15. They are Lee Shavers inserts and I like them better than the lyman inserts. I prefer the small post for most shooting and only use the others on specific type of targets. Fox
