If you read my post (WHATS WRONG WITH CVA) you know I have concernes. Here on this site I found a fella with a GPR for sale.It is 50 cal 1 in 34 twist and has a few extras such as nipples and a spare sight I think. He is asking $280.00 for it shipped to my door and says its been fired mabey 10 times but its never been in the field and is in new condition.Ive never heard anything bad about these rifles. But admit I know nothing about them.Is this price decent for this gun and are they good rifles.I will keep my CVA but feel to have a spare 50 cal wouldnt be a bad idea.

I believe that twist is the 32" for slugs, not 34". I've never seen any disparragaing remarks about these guns & believe if you want a slug shooting muzzleloader, it is the one to buy. If on the other hand, you wish to shoot round balls, you can buy an extra barrel for the gun for round ball, but the 32" twist won't shoot them well with anything over a vry light charge.
: If the fellow is tight lipped, then perhaps he's done something to the gun? Or- he decided he didn't want to shoot slugs, or whatever?

Now, if you're wanting to shoot conicals, it's not a bad price. But if you're wanting to shoot patched ball, you'd have to buy another barrel. What I suggest doing is going over to the Midsouth Shooters Supply website and see what a new GPR goes for in price. (I think I paid less than $280 for mine new from them back in 2001, I forget.) Then see what the price of the new barrel for ball would cost on top of that $280 for the rifle. Bear in mind, a GPR new comes with two sights when you buy it. It coems with an adjustable rear sight installed on it and a fixed rear sight you can replace the cheesy adjustable rear sight with. So, if you're going to shoot only patched round ball, you have to factor in the cost of getting the roundball barrel into the price of that used GPR.

The GPR is, in my opinion, the finest production muzzleloader there is. I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

I have 2 GPR one is 50 cal. (flint) and the other is 54 cal. (per.) Both have round ball twist barrels and both are tack drivers when I do my part. You might go to your local gun shops and look for a traditional ml used, most guys are wanting inlines and trade the traditional ml in . I bought my 54 at a gun shop for 165 and it's in great condition. :m2c:

Lonewolf,.... Yep, ther prices have take'n a jump, but ther GPR "kits" price increase was only 'bout $16.00 fer'a total of $262.05.

Natchez Shooter's Supply use'ta sell ther Lyman Great Plains fer a liddle less'n MidSouth,.... I don't know if ther prices went up too!!

Lyman's are still a "good buy" even with tha price increase! :imo:

A little off topic but I was wondering if a .54 cal. barrel for a Trade Rifle is interchangeable with the .50 cal. barrel. Both percussion, of course.

ndbilly,.... Are ya ask'n if tha percussion barrel from'a Lyman Trade Rifle will innerchange with tha Lyman Great Plains Rifle????... if so, no they won't innerchange! Tha Trade rifle barrel is shorter and only has one "wedge key" tennon.

If yore ask'n 'bout swap'n tha 2 caliburs 'tween 2 Lyman Trade Rifles,.... Ther shouldn't be any "exterior differences" 'tween tha 2 caliburs!!

Thanks rollingb.

Yeah, Trade Rifle to Trade Rifle. Also, would you happen to know if Lyman makes a 1:60 barrel for the Trade Rifle in either caliber?

Lyman doesn't but Green Mountain makes 15/16", 1:70, 32" long barrels for T/C rifles, in both .50 and .54. They are supposed to fit the Lyman Trade rifle, too.
