Put together a Lyman GPR kit and was down to putting the factory supplied escutcheon screws in and two of the heads broke off. What size are these screws?

The infamous GPR escutcheon screw! :) you didn't do anything wrong, the screws are just not tough enough. I had a supply of replacement screws and I'll check around. If I have them I'll happily send you some.

I only have a few and need them for a current project.

Another option is to pean a rivet head on a brass rod, cut to length, cut some teeth in to hold it and drive them in. Copper might be easier.

Oh, those itty-bitty little screws that transmogrify into spent caps when they hit the floor.

I think taking a remaining screw to a good hardware store to get a match is the best approach. Get at least eight, and replace all. To remove the plating heat the screw red hot with a propane torch, then drop in ice cold water. The plating will flake off. Refinish with cold bluing. I think this method was mentioned by Zonie a few years ago. It works.

When installing, first rub the threads on a bar of soap or beeswax to lubricate. Use a properly fitting screwdriver blade. The large 89 bit screwdriver set sold by MidwayUSA is the second best tool investment I've made for gun work. The best was the big pattern makers vise.

Finding a slotted screw or bolt at the local hardware store will be a chore that I don't envy you. You may have to go to specialty supplier or a muzzle loading rifle vendor such as Track of the Wolf.

No way in hell those screws are number 6. Those that come with the kit are smaller than number 2s. However a number 2 screw will fit the contersink. You'll find unplated number 2s in packs of ten at Brownells as replacements for a kit of assorted screws they sell. These are exactly what you need. Predrill the correct size hole and lube the screws. Best to get a set of gimlets with one sized for number two screws.
