Hi Guys.

I just bought a lyman plains pistol and while inspecting the barrel i noticed what appears to be a tube in the bottom of the barrel. it is an inch or so deep and about 2 mm thick. The hole from the percussion cap nipple is open. Its best guess is about in inch in length.

Is this normal ???

There should be no tubes in the bottom of the barrel. I'm wondering if you are talking about the drum in the side of the barrel that the nipple screws into? There should be a cleanout screw in the end of the drum it should not be open.

Thank, the grub screw is in, but thats on the side of the barrel, the tube is inside.

I think i may have found the answer.

From Lyman instruction booklet.

"The powder channel inside the breech plu is smaller than the bore diameter and doesn't allow the cleaning jag to enter. Lyman recommends the use of a .38 cal cleaning brush and/or a slotted tip cleaning rod to rech into this area"

Hopefully it is a powder channel. I tried loading the gun with 50gr of "sannadex" a local BP substitute and it covers this "powder channel"

I really hope this is it. I have searched the web and have not come accross any talk of this, which in itself is quite un-nerving

Sorry had a brain fade. It's been awhile since I looked at one. That pistol uses a patent breech and the plug end has a powder chamber somewhat smaller than bore diameter. That is the way it is supposed to be.

For any future readers of this post. The tube i refered to, is definitely part of the gun. Apart from the post above indicating that it is, lyman customer service also confirmed this for me.

Thanks again
