I don't normally check out the pistol forms on here but recently I have been toying about getting one.I was thinking about the Lyman Plains Pistol.Anyone have experence with them?I think they have a 1-30 twist. What loads can I expect to shoot out of it?How is accuracy?50 or 54?Ball or maxi? How does it compare to the TC Patriot?

I have one in .54 and it's a great shooter.
I haven't tried maxi bullets out of it yet but I intend to try some Buffalo Ball-ets.
I know some guys shoot Lee REAL's out of them.
You just have to be careful to keep the bullet seated on the powder.

I asked Lyman why they recommend not shooting anything but roundball out of them and they said:

1. The bullet may slip off the powder charge causing a potential barrel obstruction.
2. Maxi bullets will probably not be accurate out of the short barrel.

I really like mine. It fits nice and is well balanced.

Shoots just as well with 250 grain REAL over 40 goex 3f or the same volume of pyrodex p

The .54 is great, I bought mine to be a brother to my .54 GPR. Only 1 ball for the both then. Shoots 2" offhand groups at 25 yards. (Better if there was abetter shooter behind it.) Got mine cause I want to try to get a deer with it if one wonders within 30 yards, other wise Ol' Painless will get the call. Shot maxi-balls out of it (don't know what kind) Man o man it sprayed those things all over the place. Maxis were cool, that thing would bark and try to jump out of my hand.
RBs very little muzzle jump. I research the more affordable makes and decided this was my best bet.

If you buy one either replace the stock nipple or grind it down a little. On both my Gpr and Plains pistol it would take 2 hammer falls alot of time to make it go off. Bought Knight Red Hot Nipples, man I love those things goes off every time as long as I remember to add powder. ( I'd never forget that step  )

I've never had this problem and I have five Lyman Percussion muzzleloaders.
I wouldn't go and change anything until you try it first.

I have one in 50 cal. Only shot PRBs from it using Goex 3F 25 -35 Grains. Very good pistol. No problem with it so far. Very Accurate.

I have a .54 that I used to shoot extensively. It was extremely accurate, if you kept it clean. The rifling is somewhat shallow and fouling will fill the grooves very quickly. Even the choice of patch material can have an adverse effect on accuracy.

I did note one advantage to the large caliber. If you are standing in the bright sun, the large bore/short barrel combination allows you to visually inspect the bore and breech without the use of a light. You can be CERTAIN that the bore is clean on this baby.
