Hey Bill, you still around. What can you tell me about Hodgdon 3f powder. What will it compare to. I got an old can of it today in trade as part for my Navy Arms double barrel and wondered if it is comparable to Goex. Thanks for any info

Look at the label on the can.
Does it say made in Scotland?

If it says made it Scotland it was made by C&H just before they closed that plant in 1972. Not very good powder.

C&H lost their spource for buckthorn alder wood around 1970. They had brought that wood from farmers in southern France.
They then had to use two commercial charcoals that came out of Scandinavia. Not good chars for a good small-arms black powder.

The can is a collectable while the powder is sort of junky.

Thanks. The can says it is Scotland made, so maybe i will see if someone wants the can for their collection. Can i mail the can across country without going to jail if there is not powder in it? I don't want to rinse it out with water and ruin the paper label.

I have shipped empty powder cans to other countries in addition to within the U.S.

Empty the can. Then I take the nozzle with the vacuum cleaner to get all of the dust out.

A key in shipping is getting the can into something air tight. Good old Glad freezer bags will work. Empty cans that went to Australia were in two Glad freezer bags around each can.

Custms papers simply stated "tin cans - examples".
