Ground it to shape and thinner so it would bend easier.

Nice Pitchy, now I can't wait to see the series of pic's or maybe even a video if we're lucky, of you chasin around some sheep tryin to use that thing! :haha:

Never claimed it was my idea, i got the idea from several others that built them.
And the idea was to show others how to make one.

Thanks everyone.

Way cool, Lenn, I'm working on one using mule shears and a piece of leg bone. I sure like using that antler though.

Nice knife. And great pics of the process.

When I made mine, I angled the front of my antler a bit to snuggle up against that metal piece just before the blade. That way I got my antler a "tick" closer to the blade. And I also only used about half of that metal handle and two iron rivets. I've done several with the full antler/crown and curved to fit that bend in the antler. Matching that curve gets a little tricky. But I just bent the handle cold instead of heating it up - a little tougher to do it that way. Did the same when I straighted the handle up true with the blade - because the blades tend to be tweaked at a slight angle to the handles.

Here's a pic of my latest one. I used a shorter straight tapered chunk of antler. I really like how it fits in my hand - even though my pinky finger tends to slip behind the handle. I would have made a knife out of the other half of this shear, but there's a BIG chip/chunk right out of the middle of the blade.

Those Mule Shears are also nice. But they often have the end of the blade clipped back a little. (kind of looks like the reverse of a Japanese tanto blade.)

Nice work. And a fun tinkering project.

A deer leg bone does look pretty nice as a knife handle with these shears. Especially with that rounded knee joint on the end. Just be carefull when you peen over your rivets going down through the middle of the bone instead of through the sides. It's too easy to ... split ... the leg bone in half lengthwise when you peen those rivets. They just naturally want to split along that groove in the bone.

Really cool idea! My Dad use to have several sets of shears. They were probably all sold at the estate auction. Never know I was unable to attend!

A little historical note on sheep shear knives:

The few originals that have been found date from
the 1870/1880 Indian Wars and Reservation period,
and then continue on up into the early 1900's
"farm" use. So they are generally for a later time
period. If that is of concern to you. Personally,
I just like them!

Altho, I would also prefer if that flat side and
beveled side would be reversed. The perfectly flat
side tends to be on the right side - just like on a
regular scissors. But I haven't seen any old
shears beveled the other way - so far.
