I got a felt hat blank from Jas.Townsend for Christmas. As it comes, the brim is a bit much for me so I figured to pattern one after a sketch of one in the book, "The Frontier Rifleman". I cut back the brim and looked through my leather scraps box for a piece that would make a good head band, I made sure to get a size bigger than my head so I had room for this. Measured and stitched it together then I stitched it into the hat. All thats left is to soak it and mold it to my liking. Also I need to figure what kind of a hat band to put on it. All in all it was a pretty cheap project to make a hat similar to what was worn back when.

Hell Swampy had I known you were itching for a hat like that,I would have sent you mine. My wife says my IQ drops to half when I put it on... :rotf:

Don't soak it ! Use steam to shape it the way you want it. A large tea kettle works good.

Looks great Swampy! Hey, where did you get that nice pipe?? :hmm:

Dang your hide anyway, Swampy! Here you go again, launching me on another project!! :rotf:

That turned out too well not to repeat. You did terrific work, and turned out a really good looking lid. Literally, hats off to you! :hatsoff:

I don't know how authentic it might be, but one of the best looking bands I've seen on a black hat was one of hair-on black bear hide. The hair was about 3" long and really thick, and the brown bases provided just the right touch up above the glossy black tips. Food for thought, cuzz I know your regard for black bear!

Side note- My bear guide buddy fell through on the fat again this fall. I'm going to have to figure another way to turn that corner.

i was gonna get one from jas townsend ut i found another site has them for less than half what jas wants em for
