Okay, guys, I'm new to this outfit, but not necessarily to building & shooting muzzle loaders. Problem is, I haven't built a new flinter in the last five years (new son, work, wife, etc., etc., it all adds up). Time for my question: I helped build a "poor boy" style .54 cal. for my brother years ago, and he chose Magic Maple stain, as he liked what he saw of it at the Gunmaker's Guild, at Dixon's (annual big doin's in PA). Now that I'm out of touch with the market, he wants some more stain to do a companion piece. You figured it, we can't find the Maple. Any suggestions?

I just found your answer, went to the recommended site, found & ordered the Magic Maple! Thanks for the help! Sure is good to find help so quickly, and actually have everything pan-out. Thanks, again. Figure you just made a convert of me, and I'll have to check-in from time to time, just to keep current!

Might sound crazy but give Dixon's a call n see if they will mail order some to ya. Nothing ventured nothing gained. They have a web site so the contact info should be there for ya. YMHS Birdman

mighty,

I see you've gotten your answer on the Magic Maple. Be aware however, Magic Maple is Chromium Trioxide. While it makes a nice reddish brown stain when first applied, it will eventually turn green with repeated exposure to sunlight.
I have had some success with adding conventional alcohol based stains to Chromium trioxide, but if you have to use additional coats of stain to make it color fast, why bother in the first place?
Just my opinion. Good luck. :youcrazy:

Nope, none available from Dixon's. Yup, Dangler has a real nice one. Unfortunately, Lil' Brother wanted a dead match, had a second blank (ordered at the same time, same lot of wood), feels he needs the same stain. Thanks for the safety reminders, there always good to keep in mind. I have seen the "greening" referred to, but it's never been a problem. Bottom line is, he wanted, he'll get, he's happy. Thank you, all! :)

I believe you can order it from Wayne Dunlap as well.

If you ever get to a rondy that Vern Davis attends, he carries all of the LMF products, stains, acids.. everything. Also look in Muzzleloader magazine, he always has an ad in there and you can call Vern direct.

e-mail me

Seems like I have some around here

You can have it.

Green is not my favorite color

MBS has Dangler stains.... check out their new website under "Gun Finishes"
