Making a flint knapping hammer

Almost anything can be used.
Here is one I made from some scrap brass, 1/4" cold rolled rod and a handle I turned on my lathe.

Are you talking about knapping from a flint nodule or sharpening a gun flint? Can't help with the nodule, but if it's sharpening a gunflint, here's a little brass one. The head is only 1 1/8 inches long.

I made this one out of a piece of pure copper. I made the handle from an old screw driver blade that I reground to fit the cock screw.
 
I'm alittle late but thin brass pipe with a cap and half full of lead seems to work well.
 
Beautiful! Used to know a blacksmith in Christchurh, New Zealand who's trademark was the rams head. Sure looks good as a knapping hammer.

Yes the chain i made by flattening some binding wire around, then bend the flat wire around tips of serclip pliers in a figure eight before cutting the links with a chisel.
