has anyone had any luck or experience with making barrel / patch lube using hog fat, instead of bear or deer fat?

I've used bacon grease as-is and it was fine, even if it did make me kinda hungry. I quit due to salt concerns, but I recall reading folks around here saying they were happy with lard. Kinda stiff in cold weather so you might have to do a blend with an oil for cold weather.

Folks use plain pig lard all the time. You really don't need to do anything to it....

For the ones that don't know, The Bear is of the pig familey so there is not going to be much diffrence!!.I'm lucky my Brothern law gets a Bear ever few years and we render out the fat for lube.

But I have used thined lard just to see if it works. It works good and a pound of lard is alot cheaper then a tube of bore butter.

No problem using bacon grease. All you need to do is collect a batch from a the kitchen, put it in a coffee can, and add water. Put it on the stove and bring it to a boil. Let it go for a while, then take it off to cool. When cool, stick it in the freezer. Next day, punch a hole through the hardened greeas (which has dutifully worked its way to the top), pour off the water, and scoop out the nice, clean, salt free grease. The water has dissolved out all the salt, and most of the smell. It will quickly revert to normal consistency at room temperature. Use as is or mix with bees wax and you have just made true the old adage "waste not, want not!

I don't think so... bears are of the family Ursidae and pigs of the family Suidae. They aren't even of the same order - bears:Carnivora, pigs:Artiodactyla.

Thanks on the salt removal, but gee whizz! I kinda like the smell. With the black powder smoke it almost makes me think of a pig roast!
