I was given two nice cow horns and they have the core still left in them. The question is....... how do I get the core out of the horn. They have been dried out for sometime now. I've made powder horns before but they were raw horns and after they dried out the core just fell out. Please help, my new 54cal needs its own powder horn.

Trapper, searce the archives, you should be able to find all the info ya need from several previous discussions about this. If ya have any unsolved questions then be sure to come on back n maybe we can help ya out

You can "rap it on a piece of wood and pull out the core." or "If the horn has not been removed from the cow very long, the core must be removed by boiling." (1996, Making Powder Horns Book II, Robert Byerly, P.8)

Boil the horns to get them good and hot. Hold the horn by the pointy end and give it a couple of raps on a piece of wood. The core will slip right out, usually with no problem.

If you want peace in the home, do your boiling outside.

No don't throw out the pot keep it for the next horn because if you make one your going to make another and another

Thanks Guys, hopefully this weekend I'll boil em out, not sure, as it's opening day of gun season.
