Do any of you out there have a creative use for maple sawdust? I sure seem to be making a lot of it on my current project.

is that a good thing or a bad thing :shocked2: :v ..............bob

Buy a smoker and use the maple debris to cure {smoke} fish, venison and sausage. By the way, you must be starting a new project?.....Fred

You could make Firestarter disks,,

Find a old cupcake tray, Mix it with candle wax and put a wick in the middle, Make them about about 1/2 thick.

When you want to start a fire, lite the wick and it will give a good start in a camp or fire place fire...

I pack it in card board egg carton pour parifine in untill saturated ,cut int seperate "egg's' great fire starter..stickwalker

Man you must have been a girl scout :rotf: My girls made them and sold them at the local sporting goods store.

It's a good thing. I'm finally starting to shape the stock. In the words of James Brown, "It feeeeeels goooood! Da da da, da da da.

Since no one else has mentioned it.
I have worked with a lot of exotic woods in the past. I always keep a small portion of the sawdust to mix with wood glue to make same color wood fillers.

Yah, as flehto said, get thee a smoker and use that maple sawdust to properly season what ya feed yerself . . .

This is a good idea, but be careful.
Pouring sawdust on a flame is much like throwing gasoline on a brushfire. It can be quite explosive. Don't ask me how I know about either.

Jim - Trick to it (?) - soak sawdust in water and put over LOW heat in a CI pan so it smokes, not burns, just like you would do with wood chips. I haven't used actual "sawdust" but have used plenty of "shavings" from a planer with good success.

Sawed a bunch of cherry for my son to use in his smoker and gave him all the sawdust {quite a bit} and he soaks the wood and "wets" the sawdust to keep the heat within reason.....you only want to smoke the meat or fish, not cook it. I agree, shaping a new build is very pleasurable and am presently doing just that on a Bucks County and am hoping I don't drop an item into the debris on the floor because it'll be gone forever......Fred

I could give it to my wife and she could make some fruit cakes for Christmas. :rotf:

NOW I KNOW WHY I DON'T LIKE FRUIT CAKE. :rotf:
SORRY GOTTA WIPE THE TEAR FROM MY EYE THAT WAS A GOOD ONE!!!!

Is "fruit cake" called that because of the fruit that's in it, or is it a description of the guy who's eating it? :hmm:

:rotf:
zonie :)

Actually, my dog likes to eat the wood shavings as is. Don't know if it helps keep him regular though.

We have a Radio Personality in the Des Moines area that has I think a very believable theory about fruit cakes.
He beieves ther is only one fruit cake. And since no one likes it they keep shipping it off to someone else.
