Whats a good stain for a curly maple stock to bring out the personality of the stock? I bought a cva bigbore mountain rifle with a curly maple stock and really want something that brings everything out in it. Beautiful piece of CM on it!

I've used AF from various sources on the same piece of scrap maple and they've yielded very different results. Most were on the lighter side and lacked intensity while Wahkon Bay AF was darker and richer......Fred

before you go out and buy aquafortis and ruin the stock read this post http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/222530/ on one of the pages zonie posts a couple of pics of his rifles and tells how to bring out the stripe. now i dont know about you, but i like anything where i dont use heat or fire or anything thats going to burn my stock. check it out! it what im trying

If heat is an issue for you, see above link about Zonie's method. Other than AF, the Laurel Mtn Forge stains are pretty good, which he uses IIRC.

Blushing AF is not difficult at all...apply to a scrap piece and try different amounts of heat. I use a Wagner heat gun w/ 2 settings and use the higher setting but adjust the heat by the distance from the wood. Some AFs yield a lighter color and in attempt to darken the color, the heat gun is held too close and charring is the result. The last 4 LRs have had a combination of AF and LMF Lancaster brown and the results have been excellent......Fred
