Some matchlocks have a trigger and some have a lever. I understand how the slowmatch ignites the powder in the pan which in turn ignites the charge in the barrel. I am curious about the lever though. Does it pull up, push down, twist, or what? How does it connect to the ****? If anyone has a cutaway diagram of how everything connects behind the lock plate I would really appreciate it. :)

Hope this might help,

That's a beautiful lock! I am still a bit lost though. In the photo below, notice how there is a lever instead of a trigger. I am wondering how this lever operates. Does it get pulled up toward the stock, pushed away from the stock, twisted, or something else? What is involved to connect it to the ****?

The lever pulls up....toward the stock...like
making a fist with the thumb over the stock..

Ahhh okay that's how I thought it worked. Is it awkward to fire like that rather than a traditional trigger or is it easy to get used to?

I have found it easier to use the lever compared to the trigger. The lever also gives you finer control with lowering the slowmatch to the pan.

Thank you all for your feedback. I am toying with maybe making a matchlock from scratch one of these days and the lever would probably be easier to make from raw materials.
