Has anybody ever shot these out of their 54.

If you're referring specifically to the TC Maxi from the 1:60" twist GPR 54 call, yeah I worked pretty hard with it for a while. Groups at 50 yards were poor (6-8") until I pushed the powder charge up till my teeth were ratting. Won't even post the charge I had to use to get groups down to 2-3" at 50. But when I moved the target back to 100 groups really opened up with the occasional Maxi even missing the paper. It appeared that with such a slow twist I had to get the velocity pretty high to start stabilizing the Maxi, and once the velocity started dropping off past 50 the groups really spread.

Results were better with the Lee 300 grain REAL, but as bad or worse with the 380-grain REAL.

All of them shot better with a lubed felt wad between powder and bullet.

yes sir, they are one of 3 favorite conicals.I mainly hunt big trophy hogs, there is not much better test in texas other than a big hog. I use them in 7 different .54 caliber rifles, they will penetrate!!. I use 3 powders depending on which rifle I take the 3 powders I use are Olde eynesford 2F 80 grains with a wonder wad over powder I use pyrodex RS 2F 90 grains and Pyrodex P 3F. I recently picked up 15 boxes of them for around 5.00 a box, a lot of the lube was breaking off etc I shot them as they were. ive found them to be accurate and hard hitting they give a little better penetration than the Hornady great plains 425. my favorite conicals is a no excuse 535 grain. I do all of my hunting 50 yards or less most of the time closer to 20-30 yards. Its a shame they aren't produced anymore because I really like them

As someone has already mentioned, the maxi does well at 50 yards but you have to push the powder charge up 90 grains. FWIW, I have no problem killing pigs and hogs with patched round ball and 70 gns of powder.

I used to shoot them out of my T/C renegade .50 cal percussion, but it was a 1/48 twist barrel. At 100 yards I was getting baseball sized groups. Never fired them out of my GPR due to the slower twist rate, figured they'd act like Brown Bear mentioned. My grandson shoots them out of his Traditions .50 cal flintlock using 80 grains of Goex 2fg, with pretty good results at 50 yards. But again another case of a 1/48 twist barrel. I have a Lyman mold and make him a batch whenever he needs some ammo for deer hunting.

In a TC, a Maxi will slide down the bore if you tote the rifle muzzle down especially over rough terrain. Part of using these (and any conical) is minding that fact and checking the load from time to time. A few used TCs show up with ringed barrels on occasion. This may be the reason why.

My father used these for years in his .54 Renegade with good results but eventually went to round ball exclusively.

I will say this that Renegade with a maxi ball was a thumper!
