This is probably a simple question for you experienced builder but I want to replace a front sight and need to know how to measure the dovetail to order the proper base. How is that done--spot 1) or spot 2) or 3) somewhere/how else?
Thanks Bob!

sorry for the short answer but i just sanded a stock from 80grit to 320, and thats hard on an old man. if i wasn't so tired i could add info about angles and hypotenuse's and such. you are usually safe with just the base measurement. fairly standard at 3/8" but.................
and if you have to fit the sight, alter the sight not the dovetail.

Take measurements of the sight that you want to replace. Most sights are made to a standard size. Casting of the base may alter the size a little bit. If so, remove the rough cast edges with a three sided file. You want a tight fit. Drive out the old sight from left to right. Install the new sight from right to left.
