When you shoot minnie bullets how do you lube them ?
I just melt my lube and give my bullets a quick dip and then put some more lube in the cavity
But how much lube is too much ?

Regards

I put my Minies in a shallow pan & then pour molten lube into the pan until the grease grooves are covered. Once the lube has cooled I tip the pan over to remove the 'cake' of bullets & lube. I then push the bullets out of the lube & then run them through a sizing die. I don't put any lube in the base cavity.

Mathias:

Asking "how" and "how much" to lube a minie on a board like this is a lot like tossing down a couple of pucks at a convention of trying-to-reform hockey players - sure to start some action!

The short, unsatisfactory answer is, "Whatever works for you and your rifle." The next longer is, "There are at least a dozen ways to lube 'em in just about any configuration you can imagine, and somebody out here will swear by each and every method."

I use a nifty little plunger-pump device in a little tin can, designed by a sutler who caters to the skirmish trade, that you heat up on the stove. It squirts just a bit of melted lube up into the base while the rings are getting a quick bath. It is the last step in my ammo assembling operation, so each minie is already sized and set over powder in a cap-plug-like vinyl case. Each goes to the muzzle with a tad extra exterior lube that shaves off upon loading. Better a little extra than not quite enough.

Some really good shooters I know lube just the grooves. Others use a dab of white lithium grease in the base. One uses the same food-grade lube I use, but cold-fills the base flush with a little screwdriver-cum-puttyknife. Yet others use the cookie-sheet mass melt technique.

In sum, it's pretty much whatever floats yer fouling and appeals to your sense of efficiency and/or functional practicality. Or makes for a more interesting argument!

I try to keep the cavity clear of lube because I wanted to keep the powder that touched the base of the minnie ball free of any lube contamination as much as possible.

I've had excellent reults with Lee Improved Minie Bullets in a 54 caliber used for deer and elk hunting using the Lee Liquid Alox lubricant.

Three coats are applied about a day apart. The bullets go in a ZipLoc plastic bag ten at a atime, and are rolled about in a good squirt of the lubricant. They are then stood on a piece of kitchen waxed paper to dry. While I find the smell of the lubricant pleasant, family harmony dictates doing this job in the garage.

Bullets so lubricated seat with a little resistance, enough to stay in place on top of the powder all day on a warm day. Have fired up to ten shots with no leading problem.
