Last night I was watching the History channel on Sharpshooters. I this episode, They had a Cowboy Action shooter, shotgun shooter and a pistol shooter. I have seen these guys shoot and they are a pleasure to watch. The problem can into the show when they brought in this so called expert on firearms, he has collected numerous antique guns over the years. The gentleman started showing the audiance how to load a muzzleloader. He loaded an 1812 musket from the horn!GASP!! The he proceeded to tell everyone that this gun could not hit the broad side of a barn. Boy, He couldn't be more wrong. If you were watching closely when he charged the pan , he overfilled it to the point that the pan overflowed and could not even close the frizzen. My son and wife laughed when it went pffft, 2 second delay, boom. Needless to say he didnn't hit the bull(12 inch) at 40 yrdsI wish that I could have been on the show to dispel these myths by so called experts. Sorry for bein long winded but I need to vent.

Good reason to vent IMO. I don't shoot a flinter but that's just another example of 'that happens just in the movies'

Unfortunately the advertised opinion of these "experts" has a very large impact on our sport. Recently there has been a flood of "muzzleloading" articles in outdoor magazines. I say "muzzleloading" because they are mostly discussing the plastic stocked sabot shooters. In these articles they are leading the public to believe that new fangled powders don't foul or rust guns and the bullets are good out to 200 plus yards.
I wish these people would get a clue before they are published for the whole world to see.

I don't doubt he said that a bit, only because he didn't take time to develop the skills needed to shoot the old muskets, if anyone expect them to shoot like a rifle when they shoot one for the first time then they too will have similar results...

It is troubling that he pre-judged the old musket, wonder who was funding his show, I suspect its the company that makes the gun he endorses so boldly, whether its better or not...

:applause: saw the show yesterday afternoon, had exactly your reaction to it...Hank

I saw that show, and I was so angry when it was over that I wanted to call them and vent, but couldnt find a number. If this is the same show, this joker even set up a target that looked like a barn so he could prove that he couldnt hit it. The guy was counterfeit to the core, some rich eletist who thought that because he had more money that it made him smarter. There are a lot of those shows that promote hazardous practices. The only way to prevent this from being aired over and over is to contact those people and complain, and it takes hundreds of people contacting them to get their attention.

Post a contact Email address for the show's sponsor and we'll flood them with Emails...we can use the power of the Internet just like they can use the power of the TV

That episode rates right up there with anything " jim zumbo" kinda had that "if it flies, it dies" attitude to it.
One would think that if you are going to educate the masses, you would have your facts and proceedures down :hmm:

Has anyone like the department of game and fish done any studies about the effevtiveness of inline muzzleloaders, especially how many game is shot and lost because the people who buy inlines do so because they believe that they can shoot 200-300 yards and automatically kill the game animal because that what the manufacturers claims. I cant speak for all traditional muzzle load hunters but I figure with a patched roundball my maximum range is 100 yards when the conditions are near perfect meaning no wind good light and broadside shots. Lots of guys I have seen shooting at the gun range with in-lines never get off the bench and shoot off-hand, and the ones that I have convinced to try it are lucky if they can get a 6 inch group at 100 yards. Unless I'm doing tests on different things to try to see if it will have any effect on shrinking my groups 95% of my shooting is offhand with any of my firearms.

Just goes to show you that collectors and shooters are just two entirely different breeds of creatures.

You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all the time.

Pseudo experts can be compared to Vinegar Joe Stillwell's truism: "the higher a monkey climbs up the pole, the more you can see of his behind."

After talking to my wife about this so called expert, I think that maybe we should challenge this expert on the History Channel and show the general public just what our "antique firearms" are capable of. If these firearms were so inaccurate how did we ever win the war against the British? I think that a hunting show on the Outdoor Channel that has only flintlock or sidelock hunting in period clothing would really take off. Maybe I could get paid by the outdoor channel for this Idea? I think the public really needs to know the truth about the capabilities of the muzzleloaders in the CORRECT hands!!!

sorta like readin the header for one of those huntin shows where they're going back in time and hunt with "the primitive muzzleloader" and they pull out those other "in" things, boy that's depressing! :shake: RC

What channel was it? The History Channel? If so they have a board on the web for each of their programs, maybe you could post a correction on the board.

I saw this show a couple of months ago, so its not new.
You are right. This "expert" didn't know what he was talking about. And he was obviously a novice shooter.

I stopped reading those rags long ago. The stories are written by "WRITERS" FROM THE WRITING SCHOOLS. None of them are "experienced" in what they are writing about. (and don't know their butts from a hole in the ground about the subject). I happen to know some of them, they are just trying to make a living writing----- next week it will be growing flowers----- or gourmet cooking. :bull: :bull: :bull: :bull: If you want to learn this TRADE (that is--- BP SHOOTING), listen to the experts here.

Being RICH and EDUCATED don't make you SMART. Smart is native, or natural. Now,,, if you can be all three you have lucked out. I, for instance, am pretty well educated. I am also sort of smart. But I AIN'T rich, so I got left out-- kind of. But I'll bet I've had a lot more fun than some of them rich and educated fellows who ain't never heard old camp cookie sing. :winking: :winking: :winking:
