Howdy all, I haven't been on for awhile and the bug has bit again. Awhile back there was mention of using a mizzy (spelling?) wheel in a mini grinder to remove the hump on a flint. What size wheel have you'all found to be the best, friendliest, easiest to use? TIA, uncrichie.

I've used them both and far better than a mizzy wheel is the Dremel Diamond Cutter (grinding) wheel...goes through flint like it was butter.

I know that Birddog6 uses them for such. He showed me when I visited him a couple of years back. He also does a dinky thing where he puts a blob of epoxy putty on the back of a lumpy flint to create a flat spot. Clever fellow that Birddog6.

I picked up a diamond wheel at Harbor Freight Store. Just make sure it is the permantly mounted one, the interchangable model didnt work very well. I believe it was less than Five bucks.

I tried the diamond wheels & am not real impressed with them, it did good at first, but not as good as I had hoped for. First couple of flints it cut like butter. By the 9th flint I have having to really work it hard as if the disk was worn out. Will try it again when I rework some more flints. Maybe I had some real hard flints or maybe a bad wheel.

The diamond wheel does cut faster than the Mizzy as it has 5 times the surface area, but it is also harder on the dremel as it vibrates allot more & not as well balanced as the small Mizzy wheel was.

The Mizzy wheel still does a good job still even tho they are small & you have to change the wheel about every 12 flints or so. The Mizzy wheels are what :hmm: $5. a dozen or something like that ?
If you buy bulk flints in bags of 100 for under $5. worth of Mizzy's you can have them all with nice flat tops.

And if ya don't want to buy the Mizzy's & use the dremel, go to NAPA and get some gray Sonic Weld. With $5. of that hand kneaded epoxy you can level the tops of a whole bag of flints (100), and since it is dark gray it is hardly noticable..
