At my monthly Shoot this weekend a regular was selling some stuff...

My Score: "Muzzle Loading Shooting and Wining with the Champoins" - First Edition, 1973. 85+% cover, light Browning on the pages.

Came with "See you at Friendship" Photo Programme, 1969.

Interesting data: in the 1973 Slug Gun matches the shooters were using this kind of twist:

1/60 accelerating to 1/20; 1/16; 1/18; 1/17.5; 1/16; 1/18; 1/20; 1/17; 1/19; 1/18; 1/16; 1/18; 1/15.5; 1/18; 1/18; 1/18; 1/19; 1/18; 1/20.

2 or 3 undrhammers there too.

Round ball Bench Rest - 1/48 or 1/72 are the only twists mentioned (in casual perusal).

Going to be some mighty fine reading...

Oh boy! Now the cats out of the bag.
Ole One-In-Fortyeight peeked out, looked around and seeing no one in the room...poof it's out.

Roundball ought to have a field day now!

Now, I don't know nuthin about Slug Guns, other than they're heavier than a DeSoto and used to shoot things one or two states away, but those uber-fast twists (and underhammers) got my attention quickly - especially the first one with the accelerating twist rate :shocked2:.

Never heard of that before on ANY gun!

Mr. Old Ironsights,
Do believe our Parker Hale 3 band Enfield has a gain twist.
(Sorry if I misunderstand you.)
Best Wishes

:shocked2: Woke me up. Did someone say Underhammer and 1:48" twist? :rotf:

The 1972 & 1973 Champion Slug Gun, shot by Marlin Bassett, had these specs:

Gun: Bassett & Bresien, .450 bore, groove .457; Weight, 42lb; Underhammer by Bresien. Free Floating bbl, suported only at the breech for 8".

Bullet weight 535gr, 1 to 60 lead/tin; Patch, Cross Paper .003-1/2 Council Tree Paper; 87gr Curtis & Harvey.

Another Understriker:

Ken Sutton: 30lb, .486; 1/16 twist, 28"bbl; Understriker. Shoots 120gr Dupont 2F, cross patch, .0025 tracing paper.

In all, 9 of the 21 Slug Gun shooters in 1973 were shooting Underhammers.

For "Buffalo Guns" the author (Don Davis) discusses 1/66, 1/72 and 1/48, with 1/48-choked being is choice (he shot an original J.H Johnston Buffalo Rifle for a 50 4X aggragate)

BTW: They don't talk about twists at all when discussing "Shooting the Hawken Type Rifle"
