Yep - the tines are generally solid through. The palms can also be solid but are more often porous - dependent on size they can make some nice slabs.
 
No. There was one type of construction- I think it was called a mortised tang. I suppose you could reduce a section of moose antler for such a use. Actually, I wonder what moose antler is used for? I see prices quoted in a monthly trapping magazine so there must be some market for the material.
 
Slab, knife handles,use brass pins.Butt plugs for powder horns,powder measures...
not all moose antlers are big,,they start out smaller,some are just daggers,single points...
Tips are used for applied tips on powder horns,sewing kits,needle and threat fit inside a hollowed out section. :doh:
 
Moose antler tines are a number one choice for many horn makers for turning applied and screw tips, as mentioned above!__ Wish I could get more good ones!

I never knew that the tips on screw tips were made from antler- was it common? How does it turn on a lathe? How does it dye? I've always looked for horns with solid tips.
 
Yes it was widely used and it turns great on a lathe. I oughta know cause I have broken alot of them lately :doh: :doh:
