For those of you who followed the thread on the Mike Brooks type G, be advised it will soon be once again available from TOTW. I thought being as light as it was, I would be able to hold up the long barrel with my damaged shoulder. Wrong! So it is on its way back to TOTW from Florida, as we speak. It was a real beauty and a testimonial to Mike's skill, and it was painful to pack her up. I bought it the first day it was offered, I believe, and if you are interested, I suggest you do the same once it reappears. I am going to have to find a light gun with the weight all the way aft, or wait for a new shoulder. Merry Christmas, God Bless all here, Good smoke, Ron in FLA

I'm sorry that didn't work out for you. You'll be hard pressed to find a lighter gun as that one weighs 6 lbs on the nose. Keep your eyes peeled, I should have one of those done this winter that will go 5.5 lbs and have a 42" barrel.

I suggest you have Mike build you a gun with a 30" barrel. Find one to try first.

Don, thanks for the suggestions. Mike, the issue wasn't the overall weight. My left rotator cuffis badly torn, and in the new year I will have surgery. I am told that I will not recover full strength as before the tear. I currently shoot (was shooting) a straight 39 in barrel Cabin Creek by Brad Emig. Cannot hold up any long barrels. I believe I will be able to shoot a short, swamped barrel with the weight well back towards the body. We shall see. Thanks for your reply--that was abeautiful gun. Merry Christmas, good smoke, Ron

Many years ago (If I said how many I would be telling my ago ) I found that removing the butt plate and drilling out the stock and adding lead would help counter balance heavy barrels for youths, women and old men.If you do a good job no one can tell from looking, but you sure can tell from the balance.

The rotator cuff will heal. I blew out my right one weight lifting. Took a couple of months to heal. I would strongly suggest after surgery to start a mild resistance therapy program. A little exercise is good for all of us. It'll improve your shooting.

I am working a PT program now, which has helped a lot in sleeping, reduced pain. There will be much more extensive PT after the surgery, I am told. Thanks for your encouragement, good smoke, Ron

Ron:

I too 'recovered' from a damaged shoulder by a judicious, intelligent, and religious Pt regimen. In my case I had a tear in the labrum glenoid and could not put my hand above my shoulder. It took me a dedicated year of PT; 6 or more exercises, 3X per day, working up from soup cans to 10-pound weights (more now, that I'm back on regular exercise).

Best part ... I avoided surgery! Now I found a cable machine even better for PT and you can make your own set-up in your garage with cable and a coffee can full of lead or nails!

PLEASE get your Doctor's advice ...
we're not Docs here, or at least I'm sure not. I just want to reassure you life after shoulder rehab is possible. I am stronger now that I have ever been and have been back to full load weight training for years now. If and 'when' I ever feel a tweak in that shoulder, I jump right back into my ol' PT regimen.

Good luck sir!

Flint, Thank you and all others for the good advice and kind thoughts, truly the spirit of help and kindness. I am going to try everything before the carving. My wife has a colleague who is a Rugby (!) player and had a torn rotator injury. He went to a local chiropractor specializing in laser infrared treatment. I may add that to increased PT and see...I see more smoke in my future. God Bless all here, good smoke, Ron

I've been having trouble with my left rotator cuff for about 6 years. For a year or so I could not lift it shoulder high and could not shoot even my short half stock off hand. Like the others here, a physical therapy regimen helped me get it back. Talk to your doc before the surgery. The pt is easy, it requires only a bit rubber band and a door knob, and it takes only a few minutes. Nowadays, it comes back and bugs me occasionally if I get lazy on working out, but goes away almost immediately after I get off my butt and do it. I've added that pt to my regular exercise regime and have no problems shooting heavy guns any more.

When you get your shoulder back in order you'll wish you kept that gun.

Good luck with it.

Sean

Wow I have been waiting to see this gun show up on TOTW and it is already sold! Beautiful gun!

I don't know when it got back to TOTW, maybe somebody "added a hold" when I bought it, that does happen. Good smoke, Ron
