I have a problem keeping the #11 caps on the nipple of my DGW Hawkins. They fall off. I have tried 4 different nipples and the problem persists. I have tried CCI and a German manufacturer caps, same problem. The only way to hold them on is to pinch a little to deform the cap. Not easy at 15 deg. with gloves on. Does anyone make a nipple that is knurled or chamfered to hold the cap? Also what is the difference between a #10 and #11 cap. What are some of your thoughts on converting to musket caps (they really grip the nipple) Lastly what is the maximum size the small hole should be in either a #11 or a musket cap. Yeah, I'm new at this! ::

Well you could either picnh all the caps before you go out, then you wouldn't have to mess with them in the cold with gloves on, or you could try some #10 caps. The #10's are a bit smaller inside diameter, so they may work. Just make sure they fit all the way down on the nipple. You could take one of the nipples you have and file it down some to fit the #10 caps if you needed to.

Musket caps are larger in size, make sure the recess in the gun's hammer striking face is large enough to accommodate their larger size...

If you squeeze the skirt if the #11 percussion cap, it will grip the nipple and help it to stay in place...

As stated above, there is the #10 cap out there...

Lastly, you can remove the taper from the nipple with a drill and file, chuck up the nipple and remove the tapered part of the nipple's tube (base), take care not to damage the threads or remove too much metal from the tube...

I had same problem with the same gun, I switched nipples to a spitfire I think any good after market nipple would solve the problem it worked for me.

I agree with some of those above. I would replace the nipple so I can buy and use the readily available #11 cap. Heck one nipple is the price of one hundred caps and then you can use it for a very long time and find caps anywhere caps are sold. :m2c:

There are some very poorly made nipples from what I have seen on the market. I had some on a Ubeauty Remington revolver that were so small that the 10 also fell off. Some are too short and as a result the cap will not seat and may also fall off.

I am yet to have a problem with Uncle Mikes nipples. If I get any problems with nipples I order some replacement Uncle Mikes and that has always spealt the end of my problems. :m2c:

Cheers from down under
