The leather dye topic was very interesting and informative. It brought a question to mind and not wanting to muddle the topic I'm posing the question here.

So, after using fiebings UMC black for a long time I've broken away from it and am using ferric nitrate and home brew vinagaroon. With excellent results.

But, Is it a good idea to do a baking soda neutralizTion when using the vinagaroon?

According to our Dearly Departed Forum Member LaBonte, aka Chuck Burrows, yes it is necessary.

"As to how-to use it - about two tablespoons [baking soda] to a quart of warm water and then just a quick dunk in the mix followed by a good rinse with clear water - do not leave too long in the baking soda/water mix as you can burn the leather. About 5-10 seconds or so max."
