I have been shooting my MTV NE fowler with balls and I want to do some shooting with shot. I was hopeing that somebody out there have had some experiences with this gun and can share that experience in terms of laods.
Thanks for any information.

It's my understanding that the NE fowler is .69 cal aka 14 gauge. Start light with a 60gr or 70gr charge of 2f and 1 to 1 1/4oz shot. What works best in your gun will be for it to decide.

Funny you mention that gun. I was at the Hartford Conn. Antique Arms Show yesterday  , and the original that the MTV is copied after was on display for educational purposes :shocked2: . Beautiful longarm!

Thanks Russianblood
I miked the barrel and it is about .670 but I believe that it is choked because when I was fireing balls it started hard foor about 12" and the really opened up and went down very easy. I hope to be able to try your loads out this weekend.

Sorry ,but can you send a pict of your fowler? For me are some names unknown because in Europe is diferent name for a gun ,how do you know it in USA

I went out and used the New England Fowler today with 1 1/8 of 6 and 5 shot and 80gr of 2f and the patterns were impressive at 20 yds. I had made some paper shot cups and they didn't work to well as amatter of fact 2 of them held together so I loaded it with the 80grns of 2f an over the powder wad half a shot cushion wad and an over the shot card. I know I can bring game home with this gun. I was very please with shooting round balls .662dia. and a .170 patch. the groups really closed when I used and over the shot card on top of the powder and the patched ball.
I would sure like to hear from anybody else who has one of these guns.
Thanks again for your advice.

Just a brief word about the paper shotcups. Be sure they are a bit undersized in the bore and leave about 1/16" gap from the original paper edge. This narrow strip of single paper layer allows the cup to partially split when fired and peel off the shot as it leaves the muzzle. Can't help with that particular fowler but it does look like an interesting piece.

Thanks Wes/Tex
I have that gap in the paper, I use the post it paper. I also had the shot buffered with corn muffin mix. I did make a very tight shot cup then the ends were folded like coin wrappers. I will have to do some more experimenting. This gun with it's long barrel really puts some shot on the target. I shot some cans and a water bottle to test the penatration and it sent those things flying and completly penetrated the tin can at 25 yards.

Sounds like you're on the right tack. The gap worked well with shotcups made with 3X5 note cards, post-it type paper may need a wider gap...just a guess. Keep tinkering, it'll pay off sooner or later.
