I was looking around on the net and found plans for this cool ammo box. There is also a ammo label on the second page. I think i am going to make one but make it into a range box. For a finish i think i am going to sand it with 60 grit and stain it. I also it wood be great to make one of these out of old fence boards.

Sounds like you might like the textured look. I use a hammer, screw driver, saw blade, chain, knife, anything will work as long as you break the wood fibers before you stain it. I have even drove nails into the wood, then pulled them out, in a way to do much damage to the wood.

Pine with a lot of knots and cracks looks good with this method, IMOA.

Cool box!

Sanding should look waaaay better than those circular saw marks. :haha:

Pine boxes are usually painted. Oh, yeah, and they didn't have MinWax back then.

Nice ammo box.

But note the TIME and PLACE --- 1863 British military.

It would make a great looking range box for shooting at a modern gun range. But some more research would be required to see just how far prior to that 1863 date it might have been used in. So not quite right for historical gatherings before the Civil War - without further research.

Just my humble opinion to share, and best used in conjunction with your own research.

Mikey - that grumpy ol' German blacksmith out in the Hinterlands

p.s. Hmmm ... I might have to make something like that up for my 1870's cowboy/old west stuff. Or that Martini-Henry I need to find brass and a mold for and get ... shooting. The Boer and Zulu Wars are coming!

I made that exact one a couple of years ago as a prize for our annual invitational rendezvous. As I recall, it was snatched up by a Civil War reenactor who won one of the matches. Guess he knew exactly what it was...

Thank, you guys for your thoughts. Well i ended up making one into a range box. I did not sand it i just stained it. Here is a pix.
