Have a new (to me) Enfield Muskatoon coming. Will need musket caps. Are they all pretty much the same or?

One Word: Schuetzen.
Musket caps, at least the four wing, I see some guys calling #11 musket caps, are not all created equal.
That said, my CCI "dual purpose" caps work fine for my 1861 Springfield. They did not come close to working in my 1859 Sharps, where the RWS work fine and are quite a bit hotter.

RWS. RIO/Schutzen work well, but make sure they seat completely on the nipple. If they don't you will need to turn your nipple down so they do. I have found Treso nipples need to be turned down. Chuck them up in a drill press Or hand drill), take a fine file and spin the nipple laying the file on it until the cap fits completely down on the nipple with minimal pressure.

The Schuetzen caps are made of some sort of steel. They don’t smash down as easily as copper or brass (RWS) They work just fine though and I bought a couple thousand when Covid started. Probably have a thousand left, maybe I need to stock up.

I use Schuetzen in my Pedersoli 1861 Springfield rifle. I haven't had any problems with them. The CCI's on the other hand are a hit and miss. Guess they are good for reenactors but crap for shooting projectiles.
Got 3 packs of them for $14 that’s all my dealer had. He had cci for more money.
Well, that is a hell of a find at a great price.

Dynamite Nobels are the best, but all but impossible to find in the US now. There are rumors they may never be back.
Sheutzen caps are pretty good, but are brass-plated steel, and as such may not smash down onto a nipple as reliably as the brass/copper ones.
CCI caps are weak and I do not recommend them. In absolute need, they work "OK" in caplocks with a straight-in fire channel. But in guns with multi-angle fire channels, they do not reliably set off the charge.

My gun dealer says everyone buys the CCI. The CCI cost more then ones I got where sitting on shelf with no price on them.

My friend really likes the RWS wingless caps. I have some of the RWS 4 wing and several tins of Navy Arms 4 wing musket caps.
RWS and don't look back.

I have 1000s of 4-Wing CCI "reenactor " caps and they work fine in my Enfield type rifles and ok in my Springfield types.
I've gone through 40-50 round cartridge boxes with my Enfields using CCI caps, and real black with no problems
Schuetzen is hotter , and better, but I have way more CCIs so I use what I got

Midway has CCI Musket Caps for $68 per 1000, with Free Shipping above $75 and a $25 HazMat fee.
So I just hit em for 3000 for about $230 shipped. Cheaper than CCI #11's ......but I have rifles and pistols that I've already tested with the CCIs and I can actually use them, so your mileage may vary.
If you have anything other than something with a straight flash channel like an Enfield, Zouave, etc I'd stay away. My Pedersoli 1816 doesn't like them at all.
In 100s of rounds through my Parker-Hale Musketoons and P53 with the CCI caps this past winter I can only recall maybe 1 or 2 misfires that went off with a re-cap. I always bring Schuetzen caps too in case the rifle gets stubborn . CCI caps may be weak but they light powder, and that's the only job I need them to do
I will freely admit all the CCI Musket caps I own I bought because they were cheap and/or they were on a table at a gun show and I bought them. Caps are Caps and for 1/2 the price of Schuetzen I'll buy em all day . I have a stash of Schuetzen I'd rather save and use the CCI for range shooting.
