I have lost a recipe for a patch cleaner that we used to use at the range between shots. I believe that we found it in an old issue of MuzzleBlast magazine. I think it used Isopropyl alcohol, ammonia and maybe some liquid detergent. We would use it every after 4 or 5 shots and then run bore butter and start shooting another round again.

All of my searches of the forum come up empty. Can any one help?

I have found the recipes for Moose Snot and Moose Milk and have put together the materials to make some up this weekend but I really liked how our guns shot at the range with this cleaning solution.

Step right up to the wagon, son.

S t u m p k i l l e r’ s
MOOSE SPIT
All Weather Antiseptic
M/L Cleaner & Hygiene Spray

Use as you would Windex or 409 Spray Cleaner. A cleaner for when you can’t get to hot, soapy water.

Water (non-chlorinated) 5 cups
Ammonia (household) ½ cup
Isopropyl Alcohol(91%) 1 cup
Murphy’s Oil Soap 2 tbsp.

You can swap out the Murphy's for an equal amount of Joy detergent or any other household detergent.

This is an old recipe my r/c flying club uses to clean burned fuel residue off the models. Windex gets expensive. A fellow named Jim Quinn came up with the Joy detergent version. I use Murphy's for mine.

I have two reciepes that come to mind. One similar to what you are talking about uses equal parts of ammonia, alcohol, and 409. Cleans good and opens up your nose too. The one I have been using for over 8 years is equal parts of alcohol, proxide, and Murphy's Oil soap. Works great for cleaning between shots. I know someone will pipe up and despell the virtues of using proxide, saying it causes all kinds of problems, but I have used it for over 8 years with no ill effects. And I shoot often at least two or three times a week and in at least one competiton match on the weekend. Have not had any problems with it yet.
Hope this helps, Jim

Welcome to the forum what I use at the range is a 50/50 mix of alcohol and windshield washer fluid it cleans well and evaporates quickly best of all it's cheep

I've been using the hydrogen peroxide/Murphy's oil soap/alcohol in equal parts stuff for at least 15 years. Not saying it is the best, but I have never found anything better. Really cuts through BP.

All I'll say on this is that hydrogen peroxide, when fresh, is an oxidizer and 85% water. Rust is metal exposed to an oxidizer. I used to use it to brown in-the-white muskets to kill the shine and give some "patina". It rusts metal if left on the surface. Once open and exposed to air (even still in the bottle) or mixed with other additives hydrogen peroxide quickly becomes water. This still works just about as well as a blackpowder solvent.

I've been cleaning muzzleloaders with soapy water for 31 years and never had any problems. ;-)

So why risk the rust with the fresh H2O2 stuff? I guess at least you won't have any germs in your bores.

Being a relatively "new guy" Where do you keep the secret formulas for "Moose Snot, and Moose Milk. I gotta try em! I like your slogan...TRUE! It reminds me of an "oldtimer" in West Virginia...now passed. Whenever he stated that some thing didn't matter to him he'd say " It dont make me no nevermind" Thought you'd like that one.

ditto that, I use the 'winter solution' of W/W fluid it already has extra alcohol added in. I buy a gallon in the winter. I use it also as a damp patch every 4-5 shots.

Go to the index page for this forum, and look at the top for " muzzleloading Links ". Click on it, and then scroll down to Stumpy's formulas.Click on that, and you have what you want.
