I'm soo sorry guys!!! :( I'm kinda new...well really New,as you guys would say " still wet behind the ears" But when you guys mention :mose snot/mink oil/tallow and whale sperm etc..etc.. I don't under stand?? I'm asking couse You guys mention these products when hunting in cold weather. I hunt in cold weather, can just use TC Bore Butter 1000? I just bought a 50 cal CABELA's HAWKEN cap lock 3 weeks ago and have shot it at 50yards accouple days ago and can put all 3 PRB in a playing card useing 777 2ff starting with 50gr this is my target load, but when come hunting time, I'll be out all day should I be worried about my patch?

Since you are putting three patched round balls on a playing card at 50 yards, I'm not going to start telling you to change much of anything. I would go up a few grains of powder to 75 to 80 grains volume measure of your powder.

Now then you are asking about several of the patch lubrications that are used on the board. One of them, sperm whale oil is not readily available since harvesting whales for oil has gone out of favor. Follow the instructions to search for topics. Moose Snot, Weasel Whiz, and other colorfully named lotions are just another form of lubricant or bore cleaner. A classic lubrication is a mixture of tallow (Mutton Fat or Beef Fat) rendered (heated until the fat is liquid and clear) then mixed with mink oil or olive oil. Any lubricant that gives you consistent results is good to use. Bore Butter is a comercial version of the rendered fat and oil mixture.

Good hunting. Use the search tools on the forum.

I wouldn't worry about the load and patch. I don't use the T/C stuff anymore, but know it works fine. Use what works! The thinking is more that something like a really wet spit patch would freeze in the barrel.

Hello from Allendale, MI!

"Moose Milk" is a generic term for a homemade liquid lube, usually water & water soluable cutting oil are involved. The Moose Juice I make is similar but uses alcohol & castor oil in place of the cutting oil. Moose Snot is similar to Bore Butter but thicker and much less messy, but mure stable in hot and cold extremes (and cheaper to make). Click here for the recipes. And, click here for a glossary of muzzleloading terminology.

Note some liquid lubes can be applied to strips of patching and dried (flat on waxed paper). Number of dips needed can depend on the lube. This gives you a very good option in cold weather.

I thought I was getting out of the cold when I retired and came down to TN. HA! 15*F here right now!
Not much I can add to answer your questions. Others have covered it pretty well.
