Just made and stained my first horn. I need to put the staple in it to complete it. I was going to scrim it, but I don't like a couple things I did on it, so I consider it a practice session.

Nice looking horn but it does beg for a touch of scrimshaw. Maybe just your name.

I used ferric nitrate in denatured alcohol (aqua fortis) then brown shoe polish for aging. Thanks.

Looks good, nice hunting horn, course I wouldn't be able to leave all that area alone it'd be screaming at me to draw something!

Okay Okay....I'll try to scrim it. What could it hurt. I'm probably going to regret this. My art teacher gave up on me you know.

Then it would be considered from the primitive school of art and more realistic. Nice job so far though.

That is your first powder horn and it is a nice horn, so leave it like that and engrave your next horn! ___ With over 500 horns behind my belt, I still have the first one that I made back in 1974 and it is plain as hell! __ That's called memories friend! __ Remember! __ There were a lot more common "plain" powder horns, than there ever were engraved one's!

You did good!...

Rick

Horner, I agree. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You have a good looking horn, which will serve you well for many years. Do scrim on the next one.

(yes, he's been bitten by the bug - there will be a next one).

Thanks for the info  If you do decide to put some scrim on the horn... Remember it ain't nothing a little elbow grease & sand paper won't take off. Don't ask me how I know...

hey,
how do you carve the saw tooth design? is there a special chisel or something?

Not to hog-in, but that saw tooth design is called engrailing and it can be done a lot of ways! ... Some use chisels, gouges and carving knives. __ Some "fudge" and do it with power grinders, like Dremel tools, but I won't recommend that method, as you can get it trouble very quickly and mess up your engrailing!

If you put a lot of effort in making a horn...finish it out right!

Great job on your first horn! I'm sure you'll soon be working on the next one. It's addicting, ya know!

Sorry Horner75...I gotta admit I Dremeled the engrailing. I had the perfect bit for it and couldn't resist the quick way. Thanks for the encouragement. I am going to leave it alone and start another one. This one is going on my pouch for next season.
