I've been trying, for a while now, to pick a persona. I really wanted to do a mountain man persona, but I have been given a copy of a diary that my great, great grandfather wrote while he was involved in the civil war. This is a later time period than I had been thinking about, but I feel a real need to research & learn as much as I can about him & what he endured during his service to our country.

I'm open to suggestions as to where to look for information or any other help offered.

As my persona progresses I'll update here. It's probably not going to happen very fast though.

Census records. That'll tell you which county he's at and from there, you check the county court and tax records.

I recently did a research on my Great Great Grandfather on my dad's side of the family. I suggest that you check out the NATIONAL ARCHIVES web page for Civil War Records. You'll want both his service and pension records. I found a wealth of information in my GG Grandfather's pension records. I even found info about his comrades that weren't listed or wrong in a book on his artillery unit. It was worth the money I spent.
