My Hawken made some smoke

Alright! My day pooped me out but I learned a lot about my 58 and what items i need to order for it.

For starters, A new ball,patch,powder load.

90 grains Schuetzen 2f black powder
.575" round ball
.020" patch lubed with mr flintlocks patch lube

Right off the bat, there is nooooo friggin way that .020" patch is doable in the field, I had to use a small hammer to tap the patched ball into the muzzle and then shove it home with the ramrod.

3 shots, not a BAD group, but certainly not the best for this rifle at only 50 yards. My point of impact was really high as well with that larger ball. 3" high to be exact since I use 6 o'clock hold.

Next I wanted to try 90 grains Goex 2f with the thinner .015" patch and .575" ball. Still had to beat it into the muzzle, loaded nice and slick after that. I think the .570" ball will be just about perfect. Just have to suck it up and pay the price Lyman wants for their ball mold.

Here are some of the .015 patches I recovered. Not bad at all! Just to dang tight with the over sized .575" ball.

And these are the .020" patches,

Now for the sights, you can see the single shot in the bulls eye. I adjusted my sight all the way down but feel i will have to remove that sight notch deal in order to get it dead on at 50 yards.

Switching over to my CVA Mountain Pistol .50cal at 20 yards.

50 grains Goex 2f
.490" round ball
.015" patch lubed with the same mr flintlock lube.

Im not sure what the heck is wrong with me for pulling that shot to the left, I did the same thing in the video. That front sight is super thick and the rear sight notch is small. It just blurs all together making it hard for my eye to see clearly.

The next 4 shots though i was extremely happy with.

New to this, but I thought 3" high at 50 yards was what you would want to be on at 100 yards. :hmm: If you were using the 6 o'clock hold on the pistol at 20 yards, seems it would be better with a dead on hold. Are you using 6 o'clock for the sight picture? I can see how black sights on a black target might be if'y. :wink:

with my hawken, that ramp sight is good out to 200 yards. I have certain ramps on there set for such and such yardage. 50 yards dead on, one step up, dead on at 100, 2 steps up, dead on at 150,ect.

The pistol shoots low low! Just working up loads before I do any kind of filing.

Can you file the notches deeper?I haven't ever sited one in.

Oh yea....my .58 hawkins loves .570 balls and no pounding. Maybe you try smaller ball? I may try the .575 and see what happens.

I'm not sure what rifle your shooting but my Investarms 58 does well with the 570's and .018 patches. It has a 1 in 48 twist and shoots well with 100 grains of 2F but better with 110. It will give you snot bubbles though! :haha:

When it's very hard to start but then goes down easier, thats a pretty good indication that your crown is to sharp and/or abrupt.

The rear sight looks like one from a Marlin LA.

My .58 has deep grooves, so I use a thick patch. .570 RBs work with .018" pillow ticking, but I've also used .562" with the same, or with .025" cotton duck. You definitely want to verify that you can reload in the field with your under barrel ramrod. I'm willing to give up a little accuracy for a quick reload.

3 inches high at 50 yards? That is pretty darned good and should have you dead on at around 100 yards. Your group isn't all that bad, either. That is good for hunting. However, if you want it to be dead on at 50 yards for target shooting at 50 yards, in one of the pictures that you posted, it looks like you have one more notch that you can move your rear sight down. Do that and see where you are.

I'm going to give you a bit of excellent advice on wringing the maximum accuracy from your rifle. Go to www.blackpowderrifleaccuracy.com and send Dutch $20 for his system. It is the most informative and information packed publication out there. It is not a big publication but it is rich with info. It will have you cutting Xs with your rifle and will get you there with the minimum of expenditure of powder and lead. Just do exactly as he says and you will be amazed. It will be the best $20 you will ever spend on muzzleloading and will be information that will serve you for a lifetime. You won't be sorry. Not to be argumentative but twenty cents a ball is the exact reason to cast!!!!! That's just nuts but then track isn't cheap on anything.

i dont mind casting at all, I have plenty of lead and recover my lead from sand buckets i set up. I just mind the cost of a lyman mold :haha:
