Finally!

I have to go out of town on the 30th for a week. With any luck, it will get here before next weekend and I can sand, stain and get the first couple of coats of oil on the stock before leaving. Simultaneously, while waiting for stain and and oil coats to dry, I can apply coats of cold browning solution to the barrel. The lock, I plan to leave in the white.

I'm EXCITED!!!

Curious, why not brown or blue the lock? Isn’t that one of the most likely parts of a rifle to suffer powder corrosion?

Actually, I like the look of a bright lock against a browned barrel. I assume it will dull over time. I can always come back and brown the lock later if I don't like the way it looks.

BTW, it`s a .54.

The lock was traditionly left white. I like to finish it with phosphoric acid. Gives an antique gray color and some rust protection.

Hey Pete. Would you describe how to use phosphoric acid on a lock? (Use short words. I'm kinda dense.)

Can you apply it without disassembling the lock? What about the face of the frizzen?

Lock is dis-assembled. Apply solution to exterior parts (except spring & frizzen face). I use a wool dauber but a cleaning patch should be ok.
