Well it's been a while and I have missed the forum greatly.
Well the last time I poasted I was going to try my hand at black bear with my GPR in flint. Well I had luck seeing bears but they were a sow and her three cubs two nights in a row. I took a shot by the sow to scare her off but it didn't seem to faze her much. Needless to say I had lots of fun just watching them eating at the bait. They will shurely be there for next year.
My real first exposure to hunting with a ML came when a friend and I got to go on a restricted ML only hunt for deer in a consevation area about 45 minutes away, they only accepted 40 hunters in the area but last year only 21 applied so I figured we had a preaty good chance at getting a tag or two. The hunt was to start on the first week in Dec for that week only. Well I was able to get the Monday and Tuesday off work.
The week before the hunt started we were able to get out and scout the area, lucky for us we had 8 inches of fresh snow and were able to find were the deer were crossing from a been field into the conservation unit. We went down the road about a half mile to where the unit was bisected by a set of train tracks and folowed the tracks in about 600 yards and crossed back into the forest and found where the deer were coming down off the hill, we had found where we were going to set up the next week.
Next Monday came and there was a snow storm that day but we decided to go out any way. I brought my T/C " Hawken" Caplock in .50 placed some plastic wrap over the muzzel with an elastic and headed into the bush. We got to our spotts at about 8:00 am and set up It was cold about -15 C with the snow blowing in my face. Every now and then I would have to wipe off my barrel just so I could see the sights. Well at about 12:30 along comes this big doe all by herself and at about 40 yrds I let her have it broad side she jumps and takes off up the path and drops dead after about 20 yrds , beautiful kill couldn't have asked for a better kill. It took us about 1 1/2 hours to drag her out.
The next day saw us with about 1 1/2 feet of snow but it was cold and clear about -20 C. We got to our set up at about 9:00 am and tried to make my self comforable. I sat till about 1:30 and I started to get cold at least my feet did, so I took off my boots and put some hand warmers in them well I had just finished doing this and tieing my boots back up when a two does and a spike horn came into the clearing, well they busted me right off they crept by real careful and kept their eye on me. well I couldnt pull up then any way because my hunting buddy was about 100 yrds on the other side of them so I wieghted for them to go by and then I pulled on them , they were off like a shot. well I thought mabe I will go see were they went and mabe get a shot. I started to follow them and shure enough there they were about 125 yrds ahead looking back. Thinking about it now I probably shouldn't have taken the shot but that spike horn was the last looking at me with his head down low so I aimed at his chest and spun him into the ground I know now that I had got him in the head. I called to my partner that I had one down but he was still alive so he came running and put one through his vitals with this .54 Reagade.
So all in all we got 2 deer in two days and the last was a group effort.
The first time deer hunting with my ML was a great experiance.
It seems kinda funny that the guy that got me into hunting was the same guy I got into Ml and shared this hunting experiance with.
Well regards and Hellow again Fisher King.
