I have never had a proper haversack. Some were too small, some too thin. So I decided to make my own. I picked up some thick, red, "canvas like" material at the craft store, along with some pillow ticking. The red color, almost blood red, reminded me of Eastern Colonial material, which is just the look I was after.
Not having the patience to hand sew the pillow ticking liner, I cheated a bit, and used a machine. I wanted a little more organization with this bag, so I incorperated 3 interior pockets, that custom fit my spoon, knife and fork, and a small spice bottle. Never liked these things banging around the bottom of the bag, so pockets did the trick.
I wove the strap on an inkle loom, out of "combed cotton". This is very soft, and sinches up tight, for an excellent weave. The pattern was a multi-colored, that seemed to accent the redness of the bag's material.
I had some remanants from a deer hide, that I brain tanned last month, which I used to secure all the loose edges of the top and flap. Artificial sinew was used, and all was hand sewn.
Finally, I have a proper haversack, to carry all my accoutrements. Now I need to get out in the woods and get it dirty, smokey, and broken in.
Thanks for looking,
