I’ve been looking to buy a factory .58 cal slow twist hawken style rifle to feed my local Ohio wildlife for the last few months without success so when I was offered this rifle I snagged it up. It’s not what I wanted exactly so we will see if it going to stay or not. Here are some pictures of it after some adjustments and initial cleaning. Notice the 3 groove rifling, very wide lands the barrel is 1.1” across the flats so she’s beefy. Who has hands on experience with one? Thoughts on the rifling?

Don't know anything about your gun except that it's pretty nice looking. The three groove rifling looks to be the same as what they used on their Zouave and Buffalo Hunter models.

Navy Arms imported those many years ago and there wasn't much interest in them. They tacked the Morse name on them possibly to link them to the Morse Civil War carbine of which they are not a copy (actually not a copy of anything). It looks like they are rifled for minie balls with the 3 grove shallow rifling. I wouldn't be surprised to find the shoot one well.

The rifling on this barrel is deeper than every t/c I own, including some Hoyt re bores. I also can’t get over the mirror finish in the bore. How will it shoot a round ball?

Hopefully someone with one can chime in on how there rifle shoots with a round ball. I have zero interest in something that shoots a Minnie. My only interests are rb shooters these days.

I have one in 50 that shoots very well. The 58 came with a bullet mold but I don’t know what style or weight any more. Best way to tell if it shoots round balls or not is to try it!

With the right load workup it should shoot PRB and mini just fine.

Don’t worry if it’s shallow rifling. I’ve never had a minie/rifle including my Richmond carbine, Parker hale musketoon, euroarms enfield and zouave that wouldn’t shoot a roundball better than the minies they were designed for.
